Flags on ships in B14A9.5 Development Resources

No, we don't. Unless it's historically accurate. Then we might... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I added Thomas' guide to the opening post as well. We might want to not lose that one, eh? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

East India company flag would be really good....We could use normal trading flags for some fleets and have the EITC flag for others...would add some good variation to gameplay....

That would be possible; just use the EITC flag with a regular British pennant for the Colonial Powers British Merchant ships.

how easy is that?
i dont really get modelling or texturing..(i have asked thomas for help)
but if its easy it would make it alot more fun

Regarding those differencies between english and dutch ensigns before 1606, it should be up to you dutchmen to decide, as you will be the ones actually doing the change anyway. As a regular player, I would' nt be able to tell realism from fiction in such a small scale. I´d say leave it?

Also, adding flagship and commodore ensigns..well, again that is very small scale - is it worth the work? How many players would use it contra how many players would only be confused?

And what if those quest flags was the default personal flags for those respective nations? I mean, ENGLAND personal flag=jack sparrow, PORTUGAL personal flag=bartolomeu o portugese etc. Would' nt it make things easier? And if the Commodore would include a quest involving that Tea Throwing Party or whatever the idea behind the 13 colonies was called (which really IS an exciting story) that could be the standard American personal ensign?
I sure would'nt mind, as I can always change my flag manually if I want something else..

Sorry if I am too straight forward, no harm meant!

The Jack Sparrow and Bartolomeu (what would that one look like?) flags would indeed be available in the appropriate storyline as personal flag.
Or at least, that's my idea too. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

The EITC flag is another matter though; at the moment in the Development Resources, it is a personal flag,
but I don't think that really makes much sense. That's why I'd like to see that one used as British merchant flag instead.
But only in the period where the Jack Sparrow quest takes place.

Anyway, I think we're pretty good as far as different flags for different occasions are concerned.
There's just the CTD problem, but other than that, it's good. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" />
- Seperate fort flags per nation per period
- Seperate merchant flags and pennants per nation per period
- Seperate navy flags and pennants per nation per period

Refer to the screenshots on the previous page and note how there's two different types of flags on the same ship.
The bowsprit and main mast have the "double Dutch" ensign, while the other two masts have the "orange Dutch" pennants.
Now imagine the ensign being replace with the EITC flag and the pennants with British pennants and you've got the effect you want, right?

Of course this effect does require the Development Resources and even then it doesn't work on most ships.
The reason is that most ships don't have pennant locators added. This is relatively easy to do, but does constitute a lot of work,
since this has to be done to all the masts of all the ships that have flags. Of course if several people want to work on this,
it doesn't need to be that impossible to achieve. Refer to the opening post for a guide on how to do it. Courtesy of Pirate_KK and Thomas the Terror. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

Did first working ship with pennants...
<img src="http://i642.photobucket.com/albums/uu147/novotny999/Amsterdam-1.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
...so, what do you think?
By the way AmericanHeavyWarship is little too messy...

Yes, I see what you mean now. Thank you for explaining the system <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
But there really must be huge variations in the way, the different nations flied their flags, i.e. Britain would just have the EITC flag in the stern and the nation ensign on the mainmast - a pennant in the case of a naval ship and the nation ensign on the foremast. I guess this resemblance of "great washing day with clothes left hanging to dry on all masts" is the best compromise available <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

BTW: There's several ships using the same model (only copied). When you get to those, you of course don't need to redo the pennant locators for those.
You can just copy and rename the masts from the ship you already modified.

I mean, locators were wrongly named, references for flags in ship_init were wrongly named and masts are wrongly attached to hull...
<img src="http://i642.photobucket.com/albums/uu147/novotny999/americanheavywarship.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
locators and references are in working condition now, but looks like:
refShip.Flags.Mast4.Flag2 = FLAG_PENNANT;
refShip.Flags.Mast4.Flag1 = FLAG_ENSIGN;
refShip.Flags.Mast2.Flag1 = FLAG_PENNANT;
refShip.Flags.Mast3.Flag1 = FLAG_ENSIGN;
I'll look into this, when I'm finished with all ships...
BTW: I will make screens of all those ships, so later they can be used fo interfaces...

EDIT: bigger problem, some GMs could not be read...

Are you also getting mast files that the TOOL can't read? Those are the only ones you need to modify, right?
And making screenshots of the ships as you fix up their pennants is a very good idea. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

yes... not just masts, but some hulls too...

I knew some hulls didn't work, though why is anyone's guess. Didn't know about masts. Do you have an example of which one doesn't work?
We've had such troubles before. Strangely enough, certain other people COULD open those files! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

barqem1_mast2.gm, barqem1_mast3.gm.
Now trying others... so far, only hulls dont work: barque1.gm, battleship1.gm, battleship3_44.gm, battleship3_46.gm, Battleship5.gm, bermsloop163.gm, bermsloop263.gm, BlackPearl.gm, Bounty.gm, brig_n1.gm...

Alright; I'll check those files when I get back home.
<b>Request to all other modders who have the TOOL installed:</b> can you please check those files too?
I'd like to know if somebody CAN open them.

<b>Ensigns and Pennants</b>

I have changed a few now.

<b>Fort Flags</b>

Better?

You can download the files for Development Resources on the FTP.

Looks better, yes.
- Personally I do like the <a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/f/f9/Serapis_Flag.svg/800px-Serapis_Flag.svg.png" target="_blank">Serapis Flag</a> flag more than the "Don't tread on me" one though.
- I see there remains no difference between the Early Explorers navy and merchant flags.
- New added Napoleonic navy ensign looks like a good idea. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />
- Those are some fancy Early Explorers Dutch pennants!
- The British pennants look like a mix of Dutch and British. Interesting.
- White military pennants for Portugal? Wouldn't that look somewhat surrendered...? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
- Looks like most countries didn't bother changing pennants between merchant and navy ships; of course that isn't really needed either, so it's fine. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />
