Fleshing out Blaze/Nate's origins

alan_smithee

Corsair
Storm Modder
So what I am looking at the feasibility of doing is making a little scenario to flesh out Blaze/Nate's origin... he's always felt like such a 2D character, but there's potential and I have some ideas. But I wanna make sure it jives with what's already in the game. Can anyone offer me any clues? Like, for instance, I remember him mentioning his mother in passing to some character, all he said was that he never knew her, if I remember right. I can't find this dialog again... anyone know the one?

I promise I'll pay attention to what is being said in the dialogs next time. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Doesn't he respond something like that (he never knew his parents), when Mark Blaque's father says to him that "his parents must be proud of him"?

Yeah, that's one reference... Milon Blacque, the father, says his parents must be proud of him, but I don't see him respond to that... he just says that he has to go.

(The nature of this mod would involve Nate/Blaze as a little kid, starting out in his first ship... that's why I need to get this little kid model thing finally working)

He writes it in his log/Quest book. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Aha, there it is. (heh, he also gets a little choked up in another entry over seeing them reunited.) I guess it's open-ended enough for what I have in mind...

Something else I noticed in the questbook: In the rescue Lucas quest, there is an ending where you get to keep the ransom money... I'd always tried not to give it to them but they always point out their superior numbers and force me to give it up. Anyone ever been able to keep it?

I tried it once. They were able to kill Lucas before I could get both.
I considered this a failure and didn't continue to play it with those results.

Who knows?
I just might be that you can't save him without giving up the money.

Something like it being impossible saving Fawn in the tavern in Redmond, remember?

I've started that sequence by pushing him back towards the fireplace. I then stand as close to the entrance as possible. After dialogue with Danielle the guards come in and I managed to kill all four without them getting anywhere near him.
Wouldn't you know it, he keels over and dies anyway!

Ha ha, yeah I keep trying to save Ralph too. He must have a weak heart or something, flops over without even being touched. I looked at the code and he's just set like a time bomb or something, destined to die.

Just for kicks I've thought about bringing him back as a ghost or something... imagine that happy face in spectral form some night, waking you in your cabin and warning you not to hoarde all your gold let ye wear in death the burdonsome chains ye forged in life...

You know, that could be done ... tga skin in shades of blue, then have him appear only at night in the jungle under the moon! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

Heh, I like Ralph, and have tried to save him too. But of course, he is set to die, and that's all there is to it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Love the "ghost" idea, tho - I can just see the conversations a cynical Nathaniel would have with a ghost that is trying to advise him on what not to do, somewhere. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

<b>Fawn:</b> Ye've taken that Aztec gold piece, Nathaniel, it means DOOM unless you are rid of it soon!
<b>Hawk: </b>Go away, Ralph, go haunt Danielle!
<b>Fawn: </b>Don't think I don't see what goes on with the two of you! Shameless!
<b>Hawk: </b>And I suppose you never thought about it, hm???
<b>Fawn: </b>I'm not the type to kiss and tell, Captain. But you should leave her alone, I'm warning you.
<b>Hawk: </b>Jealousy after death, whew, that's a great thing to look forward to!
<b>Fawn: </b>You'llllll beeee sorrrrr-eeeeeee! <echoing laughter as he fades away>

The same circumstance occurs with Lucas as does with Ralph (i.e., KillCharacter() ). Looks like originally they planned to let you fight (and left in the 'keep money' case), but then decided against it.

Also, a note on the questbook: for the re-enabled quests, they most all didn't have QB entries (I think Thomas smuggling did, but I can't really recall--maybe a couple others), and Sailor Al wrote them pretty much from scratch.
You can do a winmerge compare of stock queststext.txt vs. build, to find what's new.
