Food

I've read where ppl have posted about running out of food for their crew ( Wheat & Rum ) & some of them reckon that it's some kind of bug.
If anyone has problems with trying to keep up with the food, you can either turn the food off in the settings or you can go to your POTC Folder/Programs/InternalSettings.h file & change the following

#define FOOD_PER_CREW 0.001

TO

#define FOOD_PER_CREW 0.0001

With only 100 Rum & 200 Wheat you can feed a crew of 964 men for 2,074 days. There are no morale setbacks or anything. You don't need to worry about having the food taking up too much of the cargo space or having to carry a lot of Rum & Wheat to feed your crew. It becomes a case of ' Set & Forget ' .

Normal setting is 0.01, not 0.001. Let me know when you get it down to 0.000000000000001 please. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

The latest setting after installing the 6-18 Update was 0.001 I changed mine to 0.0001.

The last update that had a copy of Internalsettings.h was 6/11/2006. And food was 0.01 there. If I've missed something, let me know.

In the 18th June Update the Food was 0.001 in the InternalSettings.h File, I changed it to 0.0001.

If you change it to 0.000000000000001 you will have enough Food for 318,767,104 Days. That's with a crew of 1076, Wheat 200 & Rum 100. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Except that the June 18 update doesn't have an InternalSettings.h file.

I'd been thinking about other things to add. All ships had a slop chest where sailors could buy clothing. We could carry clothes for use by the crew. And fruit (in the form of citrus fruit) would be necessary to prevent scurvy. Then we could add water (although this wasn't used much. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> ) and the other foodstuffs that were normally a part of the diet: Salt beef, salt pork, dried peas, oatmeal, cheese, butter. Beer.

Don't forget a hirable tailor to sew buttons back on the captain's uniform.

At least we don't have to buy soap to scrub the decks. Because they didn't use soap, they used sand. And "holystones." Perhaps we should have to buy holystones and collect sand from beaches.

Eventually we could change the name of the game to Quartermasters of the Caribbean. We could be the Great Beancounters of the Seven Seas. We would be feared in every port (but not for the reasons you probably think) and our descendants would become tax collectors.

I dunno... maybe it would be fun to sail for the Crimson Permanent Assurance. (Bonus points to those who recognize the Monty Python reference. Go rent Monty Python's Meaning of Life. The Crimson Permanent Assurance is a real treat!) But anything that gets in the way of me going out and taking enemy ships gets in the way of the entire game. Especially finding a port that sells dried peas and uniform buttons. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Dont forget the pitch, tar & copper sheeting that they used to stop the Teredo worms from burrowing into the hulls.
As the creature’s Latin name Teredo navalis suggests, the worm posed a serious risk to large wooden vessels sailing warmer seas, such as the Mediterranean, Caribbean and southern Pacific.

Because the hole by which the worm entered planking was very small, an infestation could be well advanced before it was discovered. In fact near half the weight of a piece of wood could be destroyed by worms before the outer surface showed signs of the worms’ presence.... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Is there also the possibility of adding the "matches" or wicks that made Edward Teach's appearance famous into a store's inventory?

LOL, Great Beancounters of the Seven Seas <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Is there a way for all food (wheat + rum) to be carried in one ship? This would make the micromanagement much easier for me.

Alot of times I capture a ship with no food and rum aboard and then I have to allocate my own provisions to feed the prize crew. This is a hassel and cuts down on the length of my expedition. Maybe there is a way to add wheat and rum to all ships so that the prize crew dosent eat all my spotted dog.

You're right. Captured ships should have some sort of provisions available, even if they're very low. It's been added in other places (quest ships, for example) so it should be easy enough to add for all captured ships as well. If noone else looks at it, I will.

As it is, sometimes you just gotta capture another ship and hope they have enough provisions for everyone. Makes for an interesting game if you don't mind the overhead of having to carry food in the first place.

The only problem with a food ship is this... You think "I can handle this battle!!!" then the enemy winds up blowing you food ship out of the water before you realize what happened and presto everyone starves lol

A couple of things. First, it appears that you can indeed have one ship carry provisions for the entire fleet. If you press F2, click on Ship, click on your crew icon, click on the Crew Rations button, you get the amount of days your entire fleet can go on the current supplies of wheat and rum. The ships appear to share.

You'd almost have to work at it intentionally to get your supply ship sunk. And even if you did, you have enough food to finish the battle. If you take an enemy ship, you get their provisions.

But it would be rather a bad experience if your only supply ship got sunk in a battle halfway between Oxbay and Redmond. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Hey! Using supply ships is a pretty nice strategy. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Thanks Hook, I didn't know I that I only needed one ship loaded with food + rum for my expedition. Since I found that out it has made my game alot easier. I now use just my flagship to carry rations and ammo. I carry a full cargo load of ammo, food, and rum, which I restock during battles. This makes micromanagement easier because I only need to sell captured cargoes off of 3 ships at the merchants instead of 4. Saves time too <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

One problem I was having was taking enemy ships with too much crew left alive to feed. I try to get rid of them on the ships I scuttled/sink but sometimes there were too many. I usualy have enough food to get back to port, but selling my goods to the merchant took too long, and the crew would usually die of starvation or mutiny. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />

LOL, selling the cargo on one ship with 0 crew took me around 500 game days <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" />

Anyway if this problem is happening to you, and you are happy with the current food settings, you can fire extra crew at the tavern, or go to InternalSettings.h and change TIME_MOVEGOOD to anything lower than 30(default). Changing this setting saves you alot of time spent unloading cargoes which gives you more time to sail, attack, and plunder ships if you've signed articles with your crew. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
