It is becoming increasingly clear to me that there is only one nation on the planet that remembers how to deal with pirates. The French navy stormed the yacht Tanit today, killing 2 pirates and capturing 3 others. Unfortunately, 1 hostage also died during the operation. The French navy has a very long history of dealing with pirates, and they have not forgotten the lessons they have learned. These latest incarnation of pirates off the coast of Somalia are nothing but thugs, criminals and terrorists. By holding long drawn out negotiations ending in paying them ransom money, they are only encouraged and emboldend. These criminals will continue to hijack ships and take thier crews hostage as long they are paid off. The U.N. needs to stop worrying about the "human rights" of pirates, and pass a resolution that has some meaning behind it. The only currency that will stop piracy is hot led, not cold cash. Vive La France!   PARIS (AP) — The French Navy stormed a French sailboat being held by pirates in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Somalia, killing one hostage and two pirates in the operation, a presidential statement said Friday.  The navy also freed four remaining hostages, including one child, who were seized Saturday when pirates boarded their ship, the Tanit. Three other pirates were taken prisoner.  It was not immediately clear where the rescue operation occurred. It did not appear to be in any proximity to the current standoff involving an American captain being held hostage.  It was the third time the French have freed hostages from the hands of pirates but the first time that a hostage had been killed. The French presidential statement said the boat was being steered toward the Somali coast.  French President Nicolas Sarkozy's office said the death of one of five hostages came at the end of a two-day ordeal in the pirate-infested waters where the seizure of vessels by Somali pirates has become a common occurrence.  "During the operation, a hostage was unfortunately killed," the statement said, adding that the four other hostages, including the child, were "safe and sound." The idea that the UN will do anything of any substance will never happen.

I agree with how they should be dealt with but getting the UN to do anything but talk about it is not going to happen.

IMHO the UN should be abandoned.

Sad abot the hostage getting killed though, would be interesting to find out if it was FF or if the pirates got them.

wasn't this the "Darwin Award Candidates" who were specifically warned about pirates

and went cruising anyways??????

Would be tempted to squeeze off one last round into a specific hostage if it were.

I agree Keith, the U.N. is worthless organization. I was trying to get that point across in that post. I probably should have worded it better ...but I had just woke up ... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
