Galeoths?

Trustworthy

Sailor Apprentice
I'm currently looking for historical information on `galeoth-style` ships, and have not found much so far. Were they really used in Caribbean piracy, or is their inclusion in PotC simply a creative liberty of the designers?

They seem like a very interesting--albeit obscure--ship, and I'd like to learn more about them.

I wonder if it's a corruption of the term Galleywat, or Gallivat, a boat used more by `Non-Carribean` operators like Kanhoji Angria.

Or maybe it's the Galeota?

It's probably not Ray Liota. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I can bet you that JMV 575 and some other guys around here will know, now if we can get them into the Burning Brig. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

You may want to check out these two books (1) "The Encyclopedia of Ships," by General Editor Tony Gibbons. The book was published by Thunder Bay Press, and (2) "The "Story of Sail" by Veres Laszlo & Richard Woodman, published by the Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, Maryland. I have reviewed these books at the library and I would think they would be of assistance to you. I hope they help.

We've run this one around a couple of times on the boards here, and I've come to the conclusion that it's probably Akella's Russian way of spelling the Dutch galliot... That of course, is MHO. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> Who knows, for sure? But it's a good question.

Here's a good thread on the topic:

Very interesting; thanks, both. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I've been meaning to check out a good reference book or two about ships, also, so I'll definitely give those two a try.

Heh heh, Catalina slipped a post in while I was typing. Thanks for the link; very helpful. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="icon_praise.gif" />

They sure were crazy about the way they fought in that period(on land as well as sea). It was really an awful `miss-match` of flesh against cannon <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
Those battle scenes in 'Master and Commander' are pretty awesome!

Very nice pic though <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
