Galley ship model in PotC?

Interesting. I've always been in favor of more nations. I would like to see some real Algernine Corsairs in their Xebecs and lateen rigs. Its a shame we don't have any galleys.

As for Germanic Nations. Prussia, while certainly one of the best land armies in the world in the 18th and 19th centuries, they had a pretty dismal navy until Wilhelm II and ol' Otto von. The Danes and Swedes, however, were very big `sea-farers`.

As per St. Pertersburg being Dutch... I haven't heard that before. I know that the city itself is Germanic (probably Prussian as the old city of Koenigsburg is just south east of St. Petersburg). During World War I the name of the city was changed from St. Petersburg to Petrograd because Petersburg was too German. Following the '17 Revolution the name was again changed, this time to Leningrad. Hence the old Russian joke.

1st Guy: Where were you born?
2nd Guy: St. Petersburg.
1st Guy: Where did you grow up?
2nd Guy: Petrograd.
1st Guy: Where do you live now?
2nd Guy: Leningrad.
1st Guy: Where do you wish to die?
2nd Guy: St. Petersburg.

We could model one to put into the game, but the oars would not move. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Maybe the oars couldn't move, but we could at least have "`oh-we`-oh, `we-ooohhh`" sound effects, right?

And... I'm learning Sweden was at odds with Russia in the 17th century, though there seems to have been open war only early and late in the century. St. Petersburg wasn't founded until 1703, when the land was captured from Sweden, and even then was only a tiny fortress. I see no reference to the style of its architecture, but I seem to recall it being described as Dutch. And I have quite a few Russian friends my age or older whose passports are the old Soviet style, and who were officially born in Leningrad.

So at any rate, Sweden could certainly fit into the game during this time period, and stretching it a little, Russia. Let's start making some `blond-haired` and `blue-eyed` skins now, eh? I call dibs on the bikini twins!

Capo, I am truly interested to see how all these turn out, should be a great addition to the game! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Regarding the galley, if the heads of the oars were under the water line then I think it would look alright. Of course, we would have to do away with all of the guns except for the `bow-chasers`. Galley's had large calibre `fore-facing` guns, but nothing else. Their turn rate allowed them to change direction and keep their bow facing the enemy. Also, I would think we could recreate the issue of the large crew by giving the galley a very high max crew, but also a very high minimum crew as well. Since their would be such a high minimum requirement, Galley captains would not be able to use the "galley slaves" as it were for boarding or cutting out. Also, fireing into the hull and knocking out the slaves would drastically interfere with the ships handling.

If we were to start work on a proper galley, then I would be inclined to add the Algernines as a nation. Yes, they weren't in the Caribbean, but they were in the Med. Perhaps there would be someone to insure that these Barbary Corsairs only used the galley, xebec, xebec barbarossa, and galleot. Does anyone know if that's possible? I would be more than happy to put together some Moorish corsairs for the crew and officers.

For that matter, is it possible to designate a certain ship texture is used only by a certain nation, so that only British Ships used the Nelson checker?

I'm going to split this topic off and start a new thread. Perhaps some interested ship modeler will pop up and offer to make a galley for the game! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

There are pretty good models of the 18th century galley type ships `Sweden-Finland`´s Coastal Navy used, in Sveaborg Museum, here in Helsinki. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

I think there's one in Michigan, too. There's a Hell Mich., as well; and not far from me, a Hicksville, one of many.

But my favourites have been those two towns I once visited in Illinois, Sandwich and Normal.

Oh my, seems I've hijacked the hijacked thread...
