game crashes soon after loading a save game

When I load my save game, Im out at sea, and after a few seconds the game closes with no error given. If I quickly hit space bar when the game loads, it goes to the mode where you see your boat, and i've gone to crew quarters and all this. Only when I go out to sea the game crashes. It crashes when the date rolls over to 5/7/1690. It strange, because the game locks up, but the 1690 looks like its changing to 1790, because the 6 starts to roll, then the game crashes.
