My Name is Commander Nathanial Hawk. I'm a privateer in the employ of the Governor of Redmond and the King of England. I command several Ships and hundreds of salty seadogs. I slash and burn my way across the Carribean in an effort to control Pirates and Brigands alike.
So how is it one lone female can make me forget king and country and kill british soldiers for a few measly pieces of gold? Have I gone mad?
It all started in a bar, while conducting a sabotage mission against the pending French invasion.
She sat alone looking a little out of place. Her clothes were obviously "borrowed" as they were to large for her petite yet shapely frame. She wore the overcoat of a french naval officer four sizes too large that hung well below her knee and a hat so large two people could seek shelter from the rain under it. She looked almost comical, and yet sweet like a little girl playing dress-up. I needed to play up to my disguise of the Spanish officer, so I offered to buy her a drink. She approved so I sat down across the table and was struck by how flawless her skin was under that big floppy hat. Not a mark on her, like she had just run away from home and had seen nothing of the world.
After some pleasant conversation in which I told her I was a Spanish Envoy offering the French navy a fleet in for their campain against the english, she leaned across the table, put her lips to my ear and whispered in the softest , most sultry french accent " I have a proposition for you my Captain." It was the single most exhilerating sentence ever spoken to me. It flowed from her mouth like warmth from a hearth. My head began to swim and for the first time I was speaking without realizing what I was saying. She could have asked me to turn myself inside out and I would have done it without a second thought.
She had a plan to liberate some gold and needed my help. How could I refuse? I explained I must complete my business first. She had a ship waiting in the harbor, and would join my fleet when I was ready. Oddly, I was enthusiastic for this voyage even though I am not a trusting man. She had offered to split the gold 50/50 without negotiation. I chalked it up to inexperience. All the while I kept asking myself "why do I trust this person?" I was losing focus on my task at hand, I hadn't even bothered to look for my quarry, to complete my original mission. All I could think of was Claire and her mysterious mission. She wouldn't even tell me who the mark was. I was to sail to Oxbay island and she would reveal the rest when we made shore there.
On the voyage to Oxbay, I found myself angry that I had be so distracted from my mission. That was soon tempered by my memory of her sweet voice and I found myself glued to my spyglass, hoping to glimpse her strolling the deck of her Brigantine. My heart raced upon doing so, my palms became so sweaty I almost lost my spyglass over the side. I had never be affected so by anybody before.
Upon reaching Oxbay, she lead us to a cove where we dropped anchor. Once upon the shore she told me of her plan and was astounded. She actually wanted to rob the mine, to steal the gold as it was being escorted by the British army. Good thing we were on shore , or I would have fallen overboard laughing. Then it hit me, she was deadly serious. She was willing to end the life of every British soldier escorting the Gold. No sooner that she told me her plan, her and her men were off in pursuit of the gold. I hesitated for a moment, long enough to realize without my help, she would be killed and ran after her. when I rounded the corner I saw she was engaging soldiers as the poured out of the mining camp. With the skill of war vetran, she felled men 3 times her size. By the time I reached the fray, all her men were dead or dying and she was facing 4 soldiers alone. I shot one, then another. My men subdued the other two soldiers. This was no ordinary girl. She could fight. And Win!
Our prize turned out to be about worth about 50,000 guineas and as agreed, we split it evenly amongst ourselves. Then as we stood on the shore preparing to depart, she turned to me and said "Perhaps, My Captain, we could join you? Most of my crew is dead and I fear I may not have the means to sail alone." I looked at her and for the first time I realized I was smitten, nay, head over heels in love. Her long golden hair, Soft blue eyes and ruby red lips captivated me. Her heart in battle commanded my respect. But her voice made me fawn like schoolgirl. I wanted to sceam " Yes, oh lord Yes!"
I paused, regained my composure and said " You and your remaining crew may sail to Flaise under the protection of my fleet. I shall even provide you with sufficient men to man your ship. I ask only one thing...". "Oui, My Captain, What is it?" She said. I replied " You must join me on my ship as my guest for the voyage, I shall have one of my officers run your crew while we celebrate our victory and new found wealth." "Oui, My Captain, I would relish the opportunity to know you better and I have always wanted to sail on a Frigate." She replied.
We reached port and by then I was hoplessly lost her presence. I made her a gift of a fast Merchantman, as I soon discovered her Brigantine suffered greatly from rot. My shipwright was amazed it didn't sink like a stone. It turned out She didn't need it though. She agreed to become an Officer on my ship. Turns out shes as skilled with a sextent as she is with a sword. We remained moored at Flaise for a fortnight during which I managed to pry myself away from her long enough to complete my sabotage on behalf of The Crown. The French Governor held a ball and through Claire we received an invitation to attend. It was then I discovered that she was actually the daughter of a famous French Commander, whom had been killed at sea fighting the British. The little raid on the mine was one of her many forays to exact revenge, as it was Sileard's fleet that had sent her father to the deep.
As is the nature of a lie, my cover as a Spanish Envoy has snowballed. Claire had introduced me to the French Govenor as such and I found myself promising Two Battleships and a Spanish Man of War. Which then led to me haveing to capture such ships and bring them to harbor.
It was almost up though when the Governor discovered the ships where manned only by a small enough crew to sail them. He complained but soon was appeased when he found they were fully armed and stocked with the makeings of war. Clair had boasted to the Govenor in confidence that I was actually a Commander in the Spanish fleet and was to ensure the fleet sailed against England should the French not have a capable commander. Now the Govenor insisted that I command the attack.
So here I am, standing on the Quarterdeck of the largest floating forest I have ever had the priveledge of sailing staring at the most beautiful and alluring woman I have ever seen, My heart beating like the wings of a hummingbird. Trying to decide, attack Redmond and lose my home or attack Flaise and lose the only woman that has ever made me feel not worthy.
I say again;
