Hello everyone

Hey, everyone. It's been a long time, but I've finally begun to surface from the swamp of "experimental methods and measurements" and my other classes. First of all, what's the latest news?

Also, I've got an idea about a music mod (well more of a sound mod), but I have almost no clue about how to go about it. I can probably look at the other music mods and try to figure out how they did it, but any advice would be nice. The mod will be simple and mainly attempt to improve the "atmosphere" of the game. In short, it may be something that I might actually be able to do and not just theorize about (like most of my past ideas <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> ). And it will involve music and sound editing, things I actually know stuff about.

PS: totally unrelated, but I've started to learn to fence (epee). It is very fun and surprisingly good exercise. Maybe one of these days I'll get so tired of the fighting in the game and actually try to make it more like real fencing (with plenty of playability of course) (or if someone really knows what he's doing, I could be the "advisor" if you will <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> )

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" />

What's the news? Still working on Build 14. Trying to get Alpha 8 done. There's plenty of new goodness, including new ships and characters, the Curse of the Black Pearl quest and the Capture Colonies mod.

What kind of music/sound mod would you like to do? I'd like some sort of music pack incorporating a lot of music of various films into the same music pack. Perhaps give each nation the soundtrack of a different movie to add some sort of musical difference between the nations. Just a random thought I had. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

the problem with adding music for each nation is that it would cause sound problems. i'm already having tremendous stuggles with trying to make the excisting amount of music i modded in to work properly (which it doesn't). and i didn't even add any new locations yet. adding more would make it impossible.

We might have to slightly redo the music schemes then: Replace the three battle music cases with nation-specific cases for example.

so, how do I start? lol.

Oh and my "idea" was already in the game. I feel so dumb <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> I just haven't played in so long. Haha. My idea was to add ambient sounds to the sailing like creaking timbers and straining rigging and stuff, but oh well.

I would be interested in compiling my own background music for the game though. I don't know about doing different music for different countries; that would be really cool, but I'll leave it to you guys with experience. I could make some suggestions of good pieces to use though. I listen to classical music a lot and have had ideas about certain pieces that would go really good in certain parts (especially a lot of the baroque composers like Vivaldi). So again, how do I start?

well, try looking into the way an excisting music pack is built. that's how i learned it. you'll also need a program which can convert your music into ogg format. you can find free ones at download.com. the most important file you should be looking at would be music_alias.ini.

take this line, for example:

name = MUSIC\Jungle_Shore_Exploration.ogg

this is what it means:

name = folder it should be looking into\soundtrack it should be looking for.format the soundtrack is in

does that help?

I thought the game was supporting mp3's? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

<b>Cheers,</b> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Not as far as I'm aware. I recall I once tried to use an MP3 and failed.

That isn't a problem, just convert mp3 to ogg with 3rd party program and it'll work.

Very true. I've got a nice program to do it in batch. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

oh, it works. but it goes a little haywire. it ignores either the ogg or the mp3 files for the location, which is completely random. but that might be my issues with making them all work. for all i know the game supports mp3 files as long as you change the last bit into .mp3

Strange; didn't work when I tried ages ago. I'd just recommend converting to OGG: that way you're CERTAIN they work. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

it's mainly used because it takes up less space. well, normally, at least. my previous converter wasn't too size-friendly.
