Can anyone out there point me in the direction of a good idiots guide to 3d modelling.
I just downloaded the accutrans modelling program Capt Hawk suggested in his new 64 thread.
Thought I might have a go at redoing the back of the Manowar to get rid of the open galleries. I converted the .gm to .wrl and got it to open up in the program, but that's as far as I can get <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Please help!!!

I tried that program for a bit, but I can't figure out how it works. If only I had a working version of 3D Studio MAX... I know how that works; I used it to model several non-PotC boats... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I can help you with the way 3D modeling works in general, but I can't help you with how that particular program helps. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Well I can't work that one out at all although it is useful for converting files.
I got hold of Maya and now I'm more confused than ever.
<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />
I think I'd better read the instructions!!!

Ahoy there. I'm also a doofus who has no idea how to work with any 3d modelling program. I find myself faced with a predicament I can't figure out. Such is my lack of expertise. I want to find out if I can modify the Manowar design using maya. I also uploaded several of the modding tools on piratesahoy but I haven't been able to figure out how to work them. If it even is possible to modify a ship design, how do I go about doing it?

It IS possible; How to do it depends on the program. You'll have to learn how to program works for a bit. Start small: try to make a box. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Vanderdecken,

That's what I'm trying to do at the moment, I want to get rid of the oopen galleries at the stern and make it more 'Victory' like.
I've found that you need a couple of programs to get the .gm file converted to a format that Maya can read.
I use the Inez Dias 'Tool' to convert the .gm to vrml then load it into accutrans and save as a .ma.
In the tutorials wikki, there is a maya plugin from akella which I think will allow you to convert .gm to a maya format and back again. I think it only works with Maya4.5 though (I've got v.7).

Anyway, I managed to get the model into Maya, but I haven't worked out how to edit it yet, so if you know how, please let me know <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I've used Wings 3D to model some spaceships for Oolite (Elite remake) and I must say that I learned to use it (basic stuff) in just a few hours - so it must be easy!

And I'm a complete newbie as well, so it is not a matter of years of practice with other programs.

And, indeed, fumbling around with some ready models is a great way to start. I tried to modify an existing ship at first, but as I tried and tried, I suddenly realised that it would be much simpler to start from the scratch (had learned enough to do that instead).

what version of maya do you have and did it come with tutorials?
i have maya 4.5 i buy on ebay 4 month ago and started try to learn with tutorials that came with it to learn <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> since that time i spend hundreds of hours learning and creating to make bermuda sloops <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/type_1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nk" border="0" alt="type_1.gif" />

have a good modding to you! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Maybe I'm failing at my attempts because I'm testing a trial version of Maya 7.0. If thats my mistake than its hilarious. Although it did come with tutorials <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

This link has a fairly straight forward Maya tutorial

<a href="http://www.ckk.chalmers.se/tutorials/maya/Pages/tutorialLevel1.html" target="_blank">http://www.ckk.chalmers.se/tutorials/maya/...rialLevel1.html</a>

I'll be seeing if some of it can be applied to ship editing later.

Well, as far as I know, the only version of Maya capable of exporting into .gm successfully is the non-PLE 4.5. Or has that changed? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I'm not sure yet!

I was planning to import my completed model into accutrans which will save it as a vrml and then use the Inez Diaz tool to convert it to .gm

It seems a bit long winded, but I think it will work. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

where is Inzane when you need him? he showed up, gave us his ship, offered some help to Chocoate bill, which wasn't replied to, then left.
