Help with world map please

I'm trying to leave Curacao and sail to Martinique - I have bought an old map from the marketplace trader but I cant use it.
If I look at it time starts to move pretty fast, rats start to eat up my cargo, all other little ship icons move around on the world map pretty fast but my own vessel does not move even at full sails... what am I forgetting here?

To press the forward button?
Anyway, you look at maps by going to your inventory screen, cliking on the map, and then "equip item" (oddly enough).

Nah, that I don't mean.
Let me clarify - I get on board my ship, set full sails, ship starts to move out; then I use the command menu to open the world map and my ship just keeps sitting in one place for ever on the map while all others move around me...
And what forward button, there's no forward button in sailing mode?

I get on board my ship, set full sails (press W), ship starts to move out; then I use the command menu to open the world map and....I've to press W again to move my ship <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> and sometimes press W+A or W+D cause my ship is stuck. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Omg, that's it!
Actually I changed the key bindings for movement to the cursor keys and those did do absolutely nothing to the ship on the world map.
The default keys move my ship though, tyvm!
