I ran across this neat little game over the weekend, it's made by Tilted Mill, the makers of Caesar IV and Children of The Nile. Unfortunately, there is no demo version, but it seems to get updated quite regularly and they have released a Halloween add on pack, with more planned for it already. It is not a really in depth game by any means, just an arcade style hack and slash, collect loot to build up your town. If ya got a spare $20 lying around, give it look, it is well worthy it! It's available on Steam, Impulse, D2D and GamersGate.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><b>Loot, level and build with fast paced RPG combat and strategic base building!</b>

Your goal is to lead a handful of peasants to establish a small haven in the wild backcountry of a fantasy kingdom. Bring a diverse cast of followers to your settlement on the edge of the world and then carefully select members of your village to put down their ploughs, leave their comfortable homes, and take whatever weapon they may have at hand to join you on expeditions of exploration and conquest in the surrounding lands. There you’ll encounter the characters and creatures of myth and folklore, and find much needed resources to expand your village whether it be iron to make weapons or a mystic tome to entice a great mage to join you. Should your forays meet with success, fame, fortune and prosperity await. But you must take care, for even the loss of a lowly farmer can spell disaster when harvest time comes.

Can you build a vibrant settlement, lead your people to prosperity, and tame the wild Hinterland?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Sure thing bob! I been playing this little beauty every morning after I get off work for the past 4 days, it's very addictive ...and also very annoying! lmao! Like I said earlier, it is not a very in depth game, there is no real story line to follow. You are in charge of your town and it's your job to build it up as you see fit. Occasionally you have to fulfill requests from your king to help build up your reputation. The graphics are really pretty good for this type of game, it's hardly state of the art 3D, but it looks pretty good. Basically, you spend your time searching the forests and wild lands surrounding your town for resources to help build up and develop your base. Once you have acquired enough gold and a good reputation You can hire farmers and craftsman, priests and acolyte's, guards, doctors, wizards and a whole lot more. They will create food to keep your town running, make potions and items to use or sell to make you some gold at the market. You can take any one of these NPC's with you adventuring so they can gain levels and become stronger themselves. While they are adventuring with you though, there farms or shops stop producing good. Once your town has developed you can even turn one of your cattle farms into a dragon ranch, and take them out adventuring with you! Nothing like having a dragon as backup! There are all types of bad guys to fight as well, from your standard spiders, goblins and orcs, skeletons and zombies, barbarians all the way up to giants. They will also launch raids against your town from time to time, and if you aren't successful fighting them off and some of your followers die, you will lose reputation points. I haven't completed the map I am currently working on, so I am sure there are several more that I have yet to run in to.

The learning curve is a bit steep, there is no tutorial, you are just thrown into the action and you have to learn what to do as you go along. That can be a bit frustrating, but after ya die and restart few times, you realize what ya need to do. You have many, many choices to choose from as a starting character, and each one of those can be male or female and each has it's own portrait. Your character has room for one weapon, one suit of clothes or armor, a shield slot, and one miscellaneous item such as magic rings or helmets. You can carry a lot more than that with you, but you only have for slots for attack and defense. As you level up, you can choose to increase your attack, your defense, or your health. There are also a few options to increase the amount of food your town produces, or the amount of gold and loot you find after you have killed a baddy. Reading through the manual they give you on the Hinterland web site helps a bit, and you can find some pretty good tips reading through the forum. There are only two things that I really don't like about the game, the first is it has only one save game slot. The game saves it's self periodically as you play, and every time you exit, so you can restart right where you left off. That can be a bit frustrating, especially if it saves just after you loose 100 rep points! . The second is it takes quite a while to load when you first start it, once your in the game though, there is no lag at all and everything runs smoothly. I have an AMD quad core and 4 gigs of memory, and it still takes this game a very long time to create the map. But it does give you some fairly cool art to look at while the game loads. I can deal with those two minor annoyances, they really do not detract from the game play at all. This is really a fun game to play once you get into it! It's very rare that you find this type of an addictive game for a mere $20. I have spent a whole lot more on so called blockbuster games that weren't near as addictive or fun to play as this game is. Sid Meiers Pirates! comes to mind! Thankfully ...there is NO ballroom dancing in this one! There is very little micro-management involved, your town pretty much runs it's self unless it is attacked. There is not a whole lot of combat strategy, your NPC's pretty much fight for themselves. Although the bad guys seem to really want to go after archers first! This is hack and slash fun at it's best!

This sounds like a lot of fun. If only there was enough time for all the fun things.

Supposedly, the maps are randomly generated with each new game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

I already knew of Hinterland. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> How, exactly, I'm not at liberty to say. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/389_robber.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":robber:" border="0" alt="389_robber.gif" />

Same here. <img src="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//style_emoticons/default/389_robber.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" /> But me didn't get it working. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" />
