HMS Sophie W.I.P

Treebiter

Landlubber
Greetings all. This is the first ship from the McTowel shipyards. The HMS Sophie, Cpt Aubrey's (of Master and commander fame) first ship/boat.

I'm using the plans of the HMS <i>Speedy</i> as a base with parts of the <i>Vincejo</i> grafted on (being the way O'brian envisioned it) with some detail taken from the (inaccurate but pretty) wooden model of the Sophie from:

<a href="http://www.chucksshipmodels.com/Ship%20Models%2002/HMS%20Sophie/hms_sophie.htm" target="_blank">http://www.chucksshipmodels.com/Ship%20Mod.../hms_sophie.htm</a>

Here's some pics (Still WIP):

<a href="http://img85.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sophie1br7.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/4121/sophie1br7.th.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>
<a href="http://img85.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sophie2zx5.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/1386/sophie2zx5.th.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>
<a href="http://img85.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sophie3in6.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/5859/sophie3in6.th.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>
<a href="http://img85.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sophie4si1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/9618/sophie4si1.th.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

Build data:

Program used: 3dsmax 8.
Poly count: est 10k polys on completion
Build method: Editable poly, patch modelled (no nurbs or backfacing to worry about)

Ship data (most data taken from the HMS Speedy):

Launched:1782
Length:78'3"
Keel:59'
Breadth:25'9"
Hold:10'10"
Tonnage:208
Crew:90
Cannon: 14 (no chasers)
Cannon size: 9lbs

Just fine-tuning the hull before I start in the deck. Should be finished pretty sharpish. I'll post new pics when I have them.

Hope you like it. Likewise, if you have any suggestions or critisms feel free to voice them.

what's the HMS speedy and what's the Vincejo? sounds like randomly picked in-game names to me.

The HMS Speedy (and her captain, of course) became famous for capturing a spanish vessel thrice her size, AFAIK this was the inspiration for the whole "master and commander" story. Dunno about the Vincejo, tho.

I really hope that it won´t be the last one <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

McTowel could you post a image of the current wireframe. the tips I can give you in this stage is keep all the objects separated. It will make it much easyer when you uv map. make sure you also keep the mesh one sided and try to stay with it. this is important. and reversed normals just flip them..

The Speedy was Lord Cochrane's first post with which he captured the El Gamo, a Spanish 32 gun Xebec Frigate. O'brian wrote that the Vincejo was what the Sophie was called prior to being taken from the Spanish. In truth, the Sophie is more of a mix of the two ships, having the Speedy's lines but with the Vincejo's Quarter deck and rudder.

As for a wireframe pic:

<a href="http://img229.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sophiewireos6.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/5087/sophiewireos6.th.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

thats a very good wire frame. very solid. just try to reduce the polys on the keel. that would be fine. flat surfs you can cheat and use less polys. Your in good shape so far

Another ship model in the works! Nice! Those are always welcome! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />
Captain Dan also made a modification of the Brigantine (SloopBrig) which was also meant to be similar to the Sophie. But that was a modification of an existing model; not an actual new one.

any progress McTowel ? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/monkeydance.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mi" border="0" alt="monkeydance.gif" />

I've just been tidying the rear and adding the top of the quarter deck. Next job will be adding the gun deck and figuring out where the gunports should go. Unfortunately the plans have too many guns for the Sophie as does the wooden model (which has 16 for some reason) so I have to place them myself (I'm leaving it until last so making a version of the Speedy will be easier.). Other than that I need to add some of the bow detail and figure-head but the majority of the building work is out of the way. Still on target for my 10k poly limit, but I expect it'll be closer to 11k by the end <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />.

Oh yes, forgot to mention I'll be making a straight HMS Speedy version too as that's more your stereotypical late 18c brig (no quarter deck, more guns etc).

Here are a few pics of the newly bedecked Sophie.

<a href="http://img225.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sophienew1hb3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/4882/sophienew1hb3.th.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

Next to do is the rear and deck features. Unfortunately I'm away until sunday so progress will be halted for a few days.

Looks good. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

Thanks Pieter <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Here are some new pics. I've been busy for the last week and haven't been able to work on it as much as I would like, but it's pretty close now as the hulls all sealed. Just little details and holes for cannons left to do as well as deck clutter.

The masts are just for effect.

As for Cannons, where should I rip them from? Also, do the have to be physically fixed or can they be placed via locators?

Looks good. On the stock models they are fixed, but some use locators for them. An good cannon model, you can find it on SeaNorris his thread about his own ship.

Great job, capt´n, a fine looking ship she is <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Thanks guys. Still need to sort out all the smoothing groups so she'll look better after that's done. Kind of wish I'd toned down on her complexity at the start though as it's slowed the whole project... along the same lines, I also kinda wished I'd used NURBS, but this way I don't get any conversion issues which is a plus.

Also, on your frigate Bava, are the deck features separate models from the hull? Trying to decide how far I want to take my single mesh. It's tempting to make the whole thing as one mesh but I'd dread the texturing as a result.

As far as I know it works fine to use seperate models from the hull, as long as they're in the same file. Even when they're not in the same file, you can still add them on later with locators.

Considering the size of the Sophie, I think around 7 horizontal and 10 vertical stations lines for the hull would have been the most convenient amount to work with (don´t know the plans for the sophie, could be more due some curves that aren´t really visible on the model itself). Especially the midship area is pretty straight on most ships, so one can omit a line or two there. But the better looks outweigh the higher workload, imho <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

They´re all separate meshes, texturing would be a royal pain in the **** otherwise. ^^ But most of the details were a part of the hull/deck once, I separated them to save some polies and ease the geometry a bit. I quite like this technique as it results in a seamless, tight look.

Here are some new pics featuring deck clutter and detail. Just a bit more detailing and trimming (and cutting our the cannon ports) left until she's finished. She's a little heavy atm, just under 20k polys with all parts (inc cannons) taken into account. Should be able to reduce it quite a bit though.

<a href="http://img90.imageshack.us/my.php?image=showboat1gs4.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/9919/showboat1gs4.th.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

Thats good to know, I was going to ask if you where able to reduce the poly count. But your way ahead of me on that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
