How complete are the various storylines?

GreySaber

Landlubber
How complete is hte Hornblower quest? I decided to try it, and I am really impressed.... when it works. Alot of the time it's like stumbling around in the dark looking for quest triggers rather then being pulled along by the storyline.

First thing you do is go to an island, then an officer tells you to go to the store and shipyard. First few times, that officer didn't show. Then you're suppose to go on a cruise and come back. Took at few tries to get another quest trigger on the 'come back.'

Overall though, I'm impressed. It must not be easy to get all that 'on ship' RPG action.

But there's several storys, so I thought I'd ask about them all.

<b>Assassin</b>
Beginning is finished and works as intended. The quest will end prematurely but you're notified of that.

<b>Bartolomeu o Portugues</b>
Finished and I managed to play through the whole thing in Alpha 9.
Bartolomeu is working on adding an expansion in the middle, involving the new Eleuthera fort.

<b>BlazeDevlin and DevlinOpera</b>
These are basically the same apart from the main character model.
The opening exists and there's some fun in the beginning, but the quest quickly ends whichever route you choose.

<b>Hornblower</b>
Opening exists and should be working. WITHOUT the craziness you describe, I might add.
The quest was intended to continue with a mission on Eleuthera, but since that island wasn't yet finished, it was put on hold.
Eleuthera is filled up in Patch 4 though, so with a bit of luck work on this will continue soon.
Short Jack Gold said he already continued the quest in a different way, but this is unreleased.

<b>Master and Commander</b>
This is just a place-holder; there IS no quest and it looks like there's not going to be one any time soon either since nobody's planning to work on it.

<b>The Legend Jack of Sparrow</b>
Although unfinished, you *should* be able to play through to the end by two different routes.
But this doesn't work if new bugs keep popping up. Some of that is fixed in Patch 4 though, so hopefully it'll again work better. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

<b>standard</b>
Finished, of course, but all the recent modding has caused bugs in this and all the side-quests that need to be checked and fixed.

At the moment we have two people working on the quests, being Bartolomeu o Portugues and Short Jack Gold.

Bartolomeu is working on these:
- Assassin
- Bartolomeu o Portugues expansion

Short Jack Gold is working on these:
- Fixing the Legend of Jack Sparrow storyline to be playable to the end
- Fixing the issues with the standard storyline
- Finishing the Hornblower quest
- Finishing the Devlin quests

It seems to me that Short Jack Gold has a bit too much on his plate, so unless somebody's going to help him, it'll be a <i>looong</i> time before it's all done. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

I could probley write you a storyline for it, but I can't program worth a damn.

Unfortunately it's mainly the programming that needs to be done.
Actually, making quests isn't THAT hard and I think most people could do it with a bit of help and a lot of perseverance. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

When I'll finish with the assigning model I'm gonna look at it see if I can do anything with it, got some ideas but don't know if I will have the spare time to do it.

Cheers, <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Personally I'd say that it'd be better to finish the Hornblower quest first.
The setting of both quests is fairly similar, so I'd say that it'd be better to have one finished one than two unfinished.
You could probably help Short Jack Gold with the Hornblower quest. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Hey, Could you just throw togeather a Dr. Maturin? Even if you don't have any more quest then that, you really do need a Dr. Maturin.

Hmm.... Any maybe a could of JA's old Lts? Babbington and Pullings and so on? Just stick them in somewhere easy to find, and give each high skills in some area.

Ah. Cool.

BTW, there's a bit of weirdness with the plot on the Hornblower storyline. Simpson is a Midshipman, and a Midshipman can be kicked out of the Navy at a Postcaptain's pleasure, so there's no need to have set him up for a courtmarshall. You don't, as a general rule, courtmarshall those you can just fire, or better yet, disrate and put before the mast.

The set up stuff could still work to get him to 'show his true colors' though.

That said, I'd love to see a transtion 'for the duel' to an area outside town, all formal style with seconds and whatnot. Heck, you could even have the select from matched smallswords, (Since one duels in these peirods more often with the smallsword then the broad.)

But then Short Jack Gold is taking some creative liberaty with all that, which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Re-writing the whole quest right now - but it's going to take time.
There are certain limitations that the available "game actions" impose that force me to find an alternative. This particular one is mainly dialog though, so not such a problem.
NPC talking to NPC starts to look silly, and for me at least spoils the game.

What exactly are your plans at the moment, Short Jack Gold? Which quests do you want to finish first?
As far as I'm aware, it was:
1) Make Legend of Jack Sparrow quest playable (should be done)
2) Fix standard storyline (but Hook's having a look at this too, I think)
3) Rework Hornblower quest (?)
4) Continue Devlin quests (?)

I actually like it. It makes the whole thing feel more realistic, provided I don't accidently blast past the dialogue, which sometimes happens.

Somehow the fact everyone talked to me and not each other in the original bothered me. Felt very staged.

...... provided I don't accidently blast past the dialogue, which sometimes happens.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->EXACTLY - and that can happen a lot - plus the NPC's tend to get "jerky" as the camera swings back and forth. Also getting them to look at each other - and not you - is a pain.

Jack Sparrow's complete then? Cool! I'm looking forward to a report that somebody managed to play through it all with Patch 4! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Who is going to work on fixing the standard storyline and any side-quests? I'm not saying it should be you, but somebody will need to do it.
There's one point where I'm certain the standard storyline will get stuck: the assault of the Bridgetown (Greenford) fort.
There's something wrong with the port boarding locator file, apparently. Which is strange because I thought at least all stock game towns should be working.
Anyway, somebody will need to make boarding locator files for all the towns for which Town Capture doesn't yet work.
Including the Age of Pirates towns.

And I think we should decide to not add any more towns/worldmaps/islands until Build 14 is done.
Just to prevent causing ourselves more work. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

HOWEVER - I have been coaching Mudd a lot off-line just lately, and he seems to be getting the hang of it.
Perhaps a (gentle - begging - threatening - bribing <pick one) note from you might produce a result.
I know he is trying to write his own quest - but you may be able to talk him into making it part of one of the others?

Very slowly getting the hang of it....trying anyway. You're right Short Jack, it IS frustrating.

I just try and figure out where similar code to what I need is used and then use the Windows Search function to find it.
You could try Erwin Lindemann's suggestion of using the Code::Blocks program.
