How do I make a transparent flag?

I want my pirate flag to be ripped like the flags of poor towns and ports.

I made a flag that looks ripped when selecting it on the flag menu but when I'm sailing around it is in mint condition.

What can I do to fix it?

it is not possible to make it ripped..
since the flag model for ships are a square ...

sorry i've been looking in to that cause i do alot of flags my self...

Yeah, I tried to make a Danish flag for someone using the proper proportions (which is more square than rectangular). It appears right in the flag selection bar but in all instances on the mast it shows up as a full rectangle.

Allas shredded flags are not possible as far as I can tell.
The town flags use an alpha channel for the shredding, so at first I thought it had to work just by adding a shredded alpha channel to the ship flag.
Well it works in the selection menu, but not in the game itself.
Strange oversight I find.
It would have been simple enough to support it, as the logo's, town flags etc do. but it just turns black instead of transparent:
