How do ship battles compare to Sea Dogs or POTC?

rschissler

Powder Monkey
I know the game isn't officially released yet, but I was wondering how the ship to ship sea battles compare to Sea Dogs or POTC? Although I haven't played POTC much (I couldn't stand the game `console-like` interface and other issues), I was a huge Sea Dogs fan and thought the ship battles were the greatest.

For those of you who might already have the game, can you describe in more detail how ship battles take place? We've been told repeatedly that we will only be able to command one ship in battle, but I'd like to see how that works. Example: Is it possible that you could wander into a hopeless battle with your sloop against four frigates? I don't mind the challenge but...eheh. Maybe share a few stories about the battles you've gotton yourselves into so far? I'd appreciate the info. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I've been in battle with 2 ships at a time. My Sloop of War against a barque running escort, and then the prize.

It can be difficult but can be managed. I have yet to run into more than 2.

Yes, you command only 1 ship in battle.

Attacking Famous Pirates, can SUCK!!!!!! They don't beat around the bush in the waters. They are all for crashing your boat and wiping you out.

Are there any limitations for how many ships you can have against you in a shipbattle?

Is 2 opponents the limit?

Can it happen that another ship of your nationality (english) helps you in a shipbattle against spanish ships?

Don't know yet. When I get that far I'll tell ya. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

I have never seen a battle against more than 2 enemy ships - and those are only seen when one ship is an escort (or so I have found). I have never had assistance from another ship either.

I seem to recall fighting against three ships, although my memory may be clouded by not enough rum... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" />

I'd be guess'n thar be no Spanish treasure fleet then <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

There ARE Treasure ships... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Well, in the beta I don't think we actually saw the Treasure Fleet, but according to the `in-game` hearsay, you are supposed to come across them. I don't know if it is supposed to be docked or out in the water, but I could imaging their numbers would be great.

...I am having withdrawals now ... :p

I ran into quite a few treasure ships while doing the beta... Not what one would call a FLEET, tho. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

In the old game, you could cpture the Treasure fleet at high sea as well, it was always one galleon after another. Makes sense, by the way, I bet it´s been very difficult to sail in close formation.

How do the ship to ship sea battles compare to Sea Dogs or POTC?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Well, they are different, because this game is different - more like an arcade game rather than a computer game, in some ways (i.e., ship maneuverability). The SMP `ship-to`-ship battles can be a little like an `air-to`-air dogfight - quick, and if you aim right, you can USUALLY sink your enemy without too much trouble...

WIND is a great factor in SMP in the upper levels - you will learn early to be sure you have the weather eye before initiating the battle - and then you should again be able to either sink or board (boarding is better, IMHO), usually with very little trouble.

PotC `ship-to`-ship battles are slower and perhaps a bit more exacting in how you have to line up your ships... Wind is still a factor, but more on the pursuit side rather than maneuverability.

In SMP, there are different degrees of difficulty - and each level up brings more challenge in maneuvering your ship. In PotC the difficulty levels are more in the HP of a particular ship or personal combatant.

HTH! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />
