How do you free slaves?

stethnorun

So I asked this in the questions and answers thread but no one seemed to know...I'm thinking not many people saw it.

Everyone refers to this like it's such an easy option to get a good reputation but I have no idea how to do this. All I know how to do is add them to my crew. Is that the only way of freeing them?

Can't free slaves AFAIK. You can free captured captains, which you do by going into your cabin, then from there to the cannon deck and cargo hold, and talking to them.

Oh...hmmm. Throwing them overboard when you are near a town probably doesn't help right?

If you have no intention of smuggle trade them then you'd better throw them overboard asap cause they eat your food (1/2 of a sailor).

though smugglers pay more <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

But it makes your rep drop and attracts the attention of nation patrols.

Which is good! The rep is easily to rise, and the patrols means EXP+stuff+money <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

As far as I can tell, letting captured captains go does not do ANYTHING for your faction standing with them or for your reputation (or your officer loyalty). It could definitely use a tweak.

Well, I just did an experiment - I've had two pirate captains in my hold, I let them go free, and I have observed rise of my officers loyalty.

As for freeing slaves, I'm stumped as well. I have like 1200 slaves in my hold right now :/

Make a quick trip to bermuda and sell them or enlist them into your crew if you don't want to smuggle

More details would be helpful, Kazeite. What was the honor level of the officers it raised loyalty with? What faction were the Captains (pirates, dutch, french)? These things will all affect the result, and freeing captains has done nothing for my 'man of honor' officer.

have u experience being near porto bello with 5 man o war and the hold is full of slave from a mission with another pirate?

do u think ill make it to bermuda with atleast 7k slave or more in total?

my only choice was to be lucky enough for my stealth to work in porto bello and land and find the smuggler in the tavern or loose a lot of profit if i just drop them at sea beside slaves are the 2nd best way to make money in this game so i usually do all slave mission with other captains and sell them to smugglers around 300 to 400 gold each <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

its the only exception my good char has selling slave to smugglers LOL

Absolutely!!! The rep and the standing must take a HUGE hit!!! You let a captured enemy captain go free and this actually you killed many compatriots!

Hi Axet

I've read in the manual that you can do this, enlist the slaves into your crew but how??
In the manual it says that you should go into the cargo bay and use the "talk laud" button. I don't see any slaves in my cargo hold (despite having some in my cargo manifest) and the only thing I can say is something about "no time, to much to do"....

Do you have to have some kind of special setting to enable this? I play as merchant..

If I decide to smuggle my slaves, I get paid good money but I am always forced to fight the soldiers in a patrol and then followed by a warship and killed. How do I do business with the smuggler without getting caught??

To enlist slaves to your crew go to your cabin and hit the enter button and choose the option that looks like a head with a speech bubble, that will bring up your choices, like sleep till morning or enlist slaves to your crew. Make sure your not facing one of your fighters or you just end up talking to them.
At lower levels its hard with the patrols, and I believe its random with a higher percentage chance the more cargo you sell the smugglers. If your not using a fast ship like the xebec or dog of war your just going to have to take your chances with the ships, they are random also. As you get higher level the patrols on land will start running from you instead of fighting, its kind of funny watching 15 French troops running from my little group of four. Also I believe the higher your stealth the less chance you get caught smuggling.

Thank you for your reply Axet.

My problem is that this option doesn't present itself. I have tried to speak out laud in my cabin and I don't get the option to enlist slaves as crew. Do I need to have some special abilitiy to get this option or perhaps reach a certain level? Or can't I do it when I play as Jan Stance?

It's probably because your crew is full. When your ship has a lack of crew or available crew space then you can enlist the slaves. And it seems you don't really have to be in your ships cargo hold when enlisting slaves to your crew (at least i'm able to enlist them while in town)

I had several who refused to join, despite having made room on the crew for them, and like you, I felt bad about selling them...

So I just transferred them to the hold of a boat I then sold. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> They're gone, and my reputation as an Honest Captain remained intact.

I tell myself they escaped from the shipyard under the cover of darkness. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" />

It helps me to sleep at night...
