How do you free slaves?

When your ship has a lack of crew or available crew space then you can enlist the slaves. And it seems you don't really have to be in your ships cargo hold when enlisting slaves to your crew (at least i'm able to enlist them while in town)<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I don't think this has anything to do with crew space. Now I have actually been able to enlist crew to my ship - while on land... when I am at see and need to, it doesn't work.
The spaniards sent a ship-of-the line after my little Corvette and I managed to beat them but with only 47 sailors left, I wanted to enlist my slaves. Then it did'nt work again! Whats the point of enlisting slaves if it only can be done in port? Or is there any other "trick" to it?

Well, i could'nt do that, how about sharks !?... instead i just pass'em trough to the cargo hold of the ship i've just taken them from... that way they are protected from sharks... i a closed room... with a closed door... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Ummm... i supose you did try that in the open sea while NOT in battle mode, right ?

Well I'd say being able to recruit slaves to replenish your crew during battle would be a rather significant exploit, so disabling it is appropriate. And it makes sense, too. I mean, what're you going to tell them? "Hey guys, it was nice of you to surrender to us like that, but now we need to take care of your buddies on the other ship. Wanna help us?"
