I saw the post and know alot of people probably have the same question. Hell I had that question and after hours and hours of trying I finally figured it out so here is a general step by step guide on how to do it.
Note that i play the game on normal, i do not have damages turned down, faster ship speed or any handicap and play as seaman.
1. Have a boat that has alot of cannons and alot of people and 1 free officer
2. Sail up to the fort into bomb range and do a full broadside from bomb range (so you can take out many cannons at once) turn and get your other side off and book it. If you do this right in the front side of the fort you should pretty much destroy almost all of its frontal cannons.
3. From regular cannon range start shooting at the fort (at this point they should have very few cannons shooting at you, your ship should be beat up pretty bad) by staying at a long range you make it harder for them to hit you with the few cannons they have left. Just keep on shooting at them untill you beat all thier cannons down.
Once the cannons from the fort all blow up the fort is down and you will get an f3 option to invade.
When you invade it is much like the ship boarding but on land. You have to kill everyone and this is not an easy task at all. Judging from the amount of people I lost (at the end it was me and 2 of my fighters still standing) and the fact that my other ships were full on men, i am guessing the force is based off your ship.
Once you take over the town press f2 and on the bottom right you will have colony controls.
