It was some years ago that i had bourght passage onboard a merchant ship sailing to the new world. The Carribean is where riches are to be made or so the tails make out and there are many tails to be had in the Carribean i had told my father. My father who's not much of an adventurer, kept saying these tails are lies more than they are true and there is nothing to be had in the Carribean but deseases, war and death. I'm more of an adventurer and had alway's wanted to see other places and the only way to do that is to work onboard a ship. I never had any interest in joining the navy because i'm not a military type of guy. Maybe work on a trade ship or something like that.
After arriving at Nevis i stopped by the tavern in search of a job aboard a ship, it didn't take long for me to find a captain who was searching for more crew. After a day at Nevis we set sail, the ship was a Heavy Lugger. I commented on the ships name saying its a fitting name for a ship "Wind Chasser". A guy who was old looking with few teeth and a dirt beard looked at me and said in a sharp vioce "thats because the ship is fast, the fastest in these waters". The captain who was standing nearbye walked over and said in a low voice "that be true although i wouldn't like to admite it" then the captain walked off. He was a small man with mousy brown hair, you would never picture him as a captain because of how well dressed he was. I asked the man beside me where we was heading "our heading is unknown at the moment" said the man who's vioce was deep and smelt like he had slept in a barral of rum all night, i was confussed though, where was we going. It was exciting to not know our heading. The man beside me again spoke "looking at the cargo we loaded onboard, i would say we are not going to make port for a few weeks" and thats exactly how it was, some four weeks later we arrives at Port Royal where we unloaded the cargo and spent a few day's resting before once again loading the ship and setting sail.
This time we had loaded much more food so i figured this was going to be a very long journey. It was two weeks into the journey when i heard some shouting on deck, i ran up to see what was wrong. "pirates" said a the captain, "hard a stern" as he gave out his orders. We was trying to sail away from the pirates who was carching us fast, i asked if we should load the guns but i got no responce. "captain should we load the guns" i said again in a more hesitant vioce, "yes load the guns" said the captain looking at me as if we hadn't got a chance in hell of escaping. I could see the pirate ship a little more clearly now, she wasn't much bigger than us but did sit lower in the water. I asked what ship that was, the captain said "its a Schooner". "yes one of the fastest ships in these waters and a favourite amoungest the pirates" said another man as he started pulling on the rope to roll the gun back into position.
"We are heading into the wind captain, wouldn't it be best if we tried to sail more against the wind" i said. "you'll make a fine officer one day and maybe a good captain, but you have muchto learn before then my boy. That ship is better against the wind than we are, so we will have to hope that with the wind we are faster". The captain paced up and down the deck as if he was thinking of how we could escape, one guy shouted "5 knots sir" the captain nodded and then looked up at the sails and then out towards the pirate ship who seemed to still be catching us. "We need to lighten this ship" said the captain, "throw what ever we don't need overboard". I watched in horror as the shot types was been thrown overboard. "wait" i shouted, "lets make some charges. If we throw some barrals of gun powder from our stern and then try to blow them up as the pirate ship gets near them we should be able to at least scare them off" The captain looked at me, it seemed like forever before he finally said something. "the boy's right, we need to do something that will either scare him or make him change course" shoted the captain with a sense of hope in his vioce.
That was two years ago, the pirate ship never did manage to catch up to us and it was a good job because after throwing those barrals of gun powder overbaord we was unable to hit them. The pirates did give up that chase, but several months later we set sail from Basse Terre, we was almost 4 day's into our journey to Port Of Spain when our captain was killed after a pirate ship sneaked up on us at night and started blasting away. We was lucky because we was able to turn back for Basse Terre. But the captain wasn't so lucky. He lost his life trying to save one of his friends who has been courght by a splinter of wood after a broadside ripped through the deck. I had worked with the captain for almost a year, we had become close friends. I had been promoted to vice captain, a position i had alway's thourght was out of my league.
The capain would tell me many stories. Stories of pirates, pirate ships like the Black Pearl but it was the ghost story about a ship called the Flying Dutchman that alway's stuck in my mind. he told me about One such pirate who had called his ship the Cursed Dutchman i remember the captain telling me the pirate thourght it would bring fear to those who saw him coming and keep the Flying Dutchman from attacking him.
After the death of the captain i took command of his ship, and his crew stayed with me and i later learned that the captain use to be a smuggler and had made many enemies over the years, including some pirates, it must have been these pirates who had come to seek revenge on that dreadful night because since the captains death we have not had any problems with pirates. I will alway's remember the captain because he was a kind man, he had tourght me a lot and had taken me under his wing so to speak. I made a promise though, that promise was to kill those pirates who had attacked us that night and i hope one day we will bump into them so we can pay them back, and we will not stop at killing the captain like they did. No we will sink there ship and make sure no one lives to tell the story, and bring fear into the harts of those who dare think of challanging us.
I am the captain of the Heavy Lugger called Wind Chasser, and this is my story.
