Low Priority Inconsistent crash after visiting companion ship in 3D sailing mode

HellSailor

Storm Modder
During one of my recent voyages in TSH campaign (I think it was Beta 3.5 WIP 13th August version, or if not, the latest version before the arrival of Beta 4), I had to escort a companion ship from Speighstown to La Tortue. Because I did this when England was NOT enemy of France, the escort quest thought that it was going well. Anyway, that's why we have this new feature about talking to that captain and warn him about changing flags, right?

Well, it seems that talking to the captain about changing flags and then come back to 3D sailing mode while sailing... makes a crash to the game. Everytime.

I had to test if this works when you are at a port or in a shore, though.

Here are the .log archives and a save before happening that crash. I decided to go to Martinique in order to complete the active sidequest of "Girl Won in a card game". For that, I needed to change flags.

Strangely, there are no error logs for that.

Let me see if I've got this straight:
- You were in 3D sailing mode
- Did you go onto your OWN ship's deck or directly onto the companion ship's deck?
- You talked to the captain in his cabin. Do you get the same problem when not talking to him at all?
- When you went to 3D sailing mode, did you do so from HIS ship or did you first go back to your own?

Companion ship deck visits can be a bit tricky at time for some mysterious reason.
Sometimes I cannot even select my own ship through the [Enter] menu while ashore.
And it seems to be more stable if you always try to go back to your own ship before going to 3D sailing mode.
But I am not sure if that is even related at all to talking to that captain.

I first went to my own ship's deck, then changing to the companion ship's deck and talk to him about changing flags. Then I went to sea from his own ship an crashed (I even went on sea from my own ship but it gets the same result, it crashes).

As for the third question, I haven't looked at it yet.

Sometimes I cannot even select my own ship through the [Enter] menu while ashore.

Yep, I have those problems too.

Updated news to this bug: You can talk to the captain on a shore and there are no crashes when you go to 3D sailing mode, but sometimes you get crashes (I don't know if it is my computer with this problem though).

You mean talking to him at the time when you are hired to escort him? That is also possible, yes.

I'd still be interested to know if the crashes you've got are indeed linked to talking to him or just because of visiting his cabin.

Hmm... Methinks it has to be with talking to the captain, and not visiting the cabin, but I'm not sure... You see, I talked to that captain, I said him about changing to a false flag, and then I went to 3D sailing mode without crashing. Then, I decided to talk to the captain again in order to see if there was an option on his dialogue to advise him we are changing to normal flag, but there wasn't any; then when I went back to 3D sailing mode, it crashed.

That makes it quite an inconsistent problem, doesn't it?

There is indeed no dialog option to revert it as that shouldn't really be necessary.
Once you tell him you'll be using a false flag, he'll just stop caring and won't turn hostile if you hoist a flag to him.
The only reason to revert that would be if you are intending to double-cross him; but if that is the case, you might as well have not have told him anything. :wp

Ok, I have done now more testing of this. It seems that if you are on shore, and you talk to the captain about changing flags, the game doesn't crash. So at least one think is tested and it works correctly.

@Pieter Boelen I recently did more testing of this. It seems that there IS a confirmed crash everytime you try to talk to the captain while on 3D sailing mode about changing flags and then return to sea. I have finished with all the tests I needed to do at this bug.

Thanks! :cheers

Some final things I'd like to clarify on:
- Does this crash occur also when you go from port to the escort ship or only when you do it from 3D sailing mode through the Enter menu?
- Does this crash also occur if you DO visit the captain in his cabin, but DON'T talk to him?
- Does this crash occur when you go to 3D sailing mode after talking to him from HIS ship or from YOUR ship or from both?

Thanks! :cheers

  1. No, the crash only happens on sea, and I have tried both return to sea via Enter menu or just go to the locator of my ship to come back to sea. In both cases, the game crashed.
  2. I have to look at it; I just forgot that thing I didn't remember.
  3. From what I remember, in both cases, my ship and his ship, when I return to sea, it crashes. I decided first to go back to sea by my ship because you said it was more stable. In any case, I would to have another look at it just to confirm.
Thanks for the questions; Sometimes I just don't know all the possible cases.

@Pieter Boelen, I have tested more of this strange bug. I did what you ask on your second question: Yes, the games crashes also and everytime when visiting his captain's cabin and not talking to him. But I think I know why: It's because when I go to the companions' ship's deck, the scenary around me was the port of Bridgetown, not the sea. I don't know if that aport means something to you.

I suspected that it wasn't actually related to the talking.
Probably something not right with that "visit other ship at sea" feature.
That's annoying because I'm not at all familiar with that and why it might cause crashes. :modding

Done. Also renamed for accuracy.

It is an inconsistent crash, right? As in: sometimes it does work?

Hmm... The crash in the sea is 100% for sure. You can try multiple times, that no one is going to work properly. On shore, well... normally it doesn't crash, but that's not 100% at all... so yeah, maybe its a bit inconsistent ONLY in the shore.

It would be helpful if someone more could test also this problem and give more feedback to this.

Bumping this in case anyone wants to help to test this.
