installation woes

the reverend

Landlubber
Firstly hello all. I am shamelessly pulling my usual trick of buying some new software, having problems and running crying (almost literally) to the nearest forum.

I am a great fan of the original sea dogs and decided to get POTC today. When i try to install it, it tells me i do not have enough hard disk space. I have over 3 gigs free, and because of my miniscule hard drive cant free up much more. The box says i only need 1.5g and that still leaves the same again for the swap file thingey. What is up? Am i up that infamous creek without a paddling device? I have looked through this (very good) forum but cant see the problem repeated anywhere nor does the bethesda website have anything.

Can anyone help or should i throw the game through the window and run over it a few times with the lawnmower laughing like a madman throughout?

My system specs if it helps are:

Athlon 900mhz
Geforce 128
256mb Ram
5 gig hard drive

Any help would be much appreciated as my computer seems to be waging a psychological war of terror on me at the moment. Will you do nothing without protest you infernal machine?!

Thanks in advance

Hmm. Can't say I've ever seen that one before...
Well, if it still won't install after a goodly amount of cursing, you can try extracting all the files manually with a CAB extractor. As IIRC it doesn't need registry entries or DLLs to work, just the base files.

To free space, manually set your swap file to 10mb min and max first, then reboot, then install POTC. Then set it back to whatever you like. Maybe that'll help...

Be advised my current install is 2.85GB on disk (2.6 actual)...

well im glad im at least original in my problem.....
Ive been trying an extensive abuse campaign this morning but ive got about as far as i can with it without some serious research into swearing (although i seem to have developed some interesting new combinations).

Thanks for the advice though. Ill try the swap file first and then the old cab extractor. It sounds as though i really just dont have enough space if your install is 2.85GB. I might just have to strip out all non essential software and try again in combination with the swearing.....
i wonder how much space solitaire takes up.......

Thanks again, `toodle-pip`.

Sure.
Got my fingers crossed for ya. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

{Hmm. You can also try cleaning out your IE cache, if you haven't yet; also, what OS do you have? Various versions have various stashes where they put install files that aren't needed...}

woo hoo. i can put the lawnmower away and apologise to the neighbours for the early morning barrage of profanity. I finally had to free up 3.5GB and then the darn thing deigned to install. I guess the box was just lying, probably in cahoots with my pc. I dont have a fat lot left though so cleaning out caches would be a good idea. Im running a steam powered windows 98.

cheers for the tolerance.

PS isnt the sea supposed to be blue? ....no.....never mind i dont have the heart for any more struggle.

Is the ocean white? Try this:

<a href="http://mods.piratesahoy.net/index.php?action=view&view=entry&entryid=69" target="_blank">http://mods.piratesahoy.net/index.php?acti...ntry&entryid=69</a>
Extract that to your POTC directory and overwrite.
That fixes the nvidia shader problems.
From the Russian patch.

HTH! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

thanks for the tip orf old girl. Think ill pop along in a trice and have the thing purring along in a jiffy, what. Toodle pip.

<snicker> Maybe I should have said "Bob's yer uncle!" <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

With a `first-gen` Geforce you wouldn't see any of the pixel shader effects that GF3/Radeon 8500 and up cards get I'm afraid...so the sea probably looks flat and blue/gray rather than the `blue-with`-`sun-highlights` you see in screenshots.

And so the above patch will _probably_ not help, since you're not using the shader programs anyway. Can't _hurt_ though, so it's worth a try. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

If you like, upload a screenshot somewhere (www.imageshack.us maybe) and give us the link and we'll go from there...
