Ouch... I had understood that Tages was better than Starforce, at least when it comes to <i>not messing up people's computers</i>.
As far as I have been able to gather, the two are not actually related.

have you noticed the gradation in version numbers in star force and tages? :p TAGES in this game is 5.5.3.6....... Star force dissapeared after 4 I think.... :p

TAGES and Starforce are not made by the same company.
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TAGES" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TAGES</a>
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starforce" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starforce</a>
Never had problems with TAGES, and I do own a few games protected by it. Yes, you can't make a backup copy from a TAGES protected disc, but the protection doesn't mess with your PC. As for the blue screen, try cleaning your cooler, as I suspect an overheat problem. Also check the cooler on the videocard. If you are on Vista, the overheating problem it's even more possible, as Vista stresses a lot your graphic card and CPU.

P.S.: Starforce didn't died, it just changed the name. Now it's called Frontline.

I just visited homepage of producers of this whole TAGES - it uses special driver to access some hidden data saved in audio format not included into disk's TOC. It sounds complicated and I suspect that by using this there's a high probability that something can go wrong (including damage to the CD ROM). I suspect that there's also no info about that installer need to install that additional "driver"? Even if it isn't quite related to Starforce, it sounds Starforce-like.

I understand need of software protection, but if someone is producing something which can damage user's computer in the name of "intelectual ownership protection", belonging to a corporation, that's very wrong. In my opinion companies which use dangerous protection systems should pay for repairing of potential damages caused by their "anti-piracy-protection" software.

TAGES isn't impossible for piracy <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Actually there is. Of course if you say no you won't be able to play the game, but it does let you know what it wants to install.

I don't, for several reasons, but that's a whole another discussion and I don't want my debut on this forum to be a rant. Suffice to say that yes, a pirated version fo COAS is already out and reportedly working well, so the protection didn't protect anything and serves only to annoy legal customers, as usual.

The whole information about protection system should be clearly visible on the box. Maybe there is, I didn't see it yet. But I doubt - the main goal of the corporation is to sell whatever they made and not to play fair with a client, who is important only when considering buying something from them.

Well yeah, that's all there is. It just tells you it needs to install some drivers and the name of the copy protection (IIRC), the rest is up to you to look up. Still a significant step forward from the sneaky SF, though.

hell yeah <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

here's a pic of this TAGES client... <a href="http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=gxZybIA" target="_blank">http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=gxZybIA</a>

TAGES can be cracked, no doubt about that. But you won't be able to do a perfect copy of your original DVD. So most likely you'll end up with a pirate version for backup purposes. Since TAGES was released there were no actual complaints about doing anything to your PC other than installing that driver (SecuROM, Starforce and a few other protections are installing drivers and are far more damaging than TAGES). I have The Witcher from it's initial release (not the Enhanced Edition ) and never had problems while using my original DVD. In any aspects SecuROM and Starforce are more damaging to your PC and OS than TAGES (wow never thought that I'll defend a protection). Also, TAGES removes itself when you are uninstalling the game, while Starforce and SecuRom leave their drivers behind.

I know this is an old post but I thought someone mite be interested in this

I use alcohol 120% to mount an image of the game that I found on the GameCopy World web site and when ever I wont to play I just mount and play without the DVD which in sitting in it's box on a shelf with the rest of my games.

There is a NoDvd patch on the site but it's only for the Russian version of the game not the English one and you have to use the 1.1 and 1.2 updates for the patch to work.
