Is it just me or is this game a tad easy

rich

Landlubber
I never played the original i admit, but i love Sid M's games, i still play colonisation now and again, but this pirate game, mmm. the first couple of days, well not much else in my life happened only pirates, but very soon, and restating at the highesty difficulty i relise how stupidly easy the game is. As soon as i can get a royal sloop i can take on Henry Morgan (supposedly the toughest pirate), i never loose a ship battle, or a sword fight (also use grape/chain and you never actually need to duel), the dancing isa little more tricky but not too much more so, the town attacks play like a stategy game from 10 years ago. Basically there is no challenge in the game, just easy repetative steps along the way. Surley if you make a country a major enemy they should try to kill you, SEND A FLEET, not just one royal sloop.....

The game seems too easy, and very repeative, is there some major wonderful interesting part that somehow ive completely missed, or have other people seen this?

Rich

P.S. I have had this game for under a week, feeling somewhat cheated out of my cash

I think to an extent the only thing you've missed is perhaps trying the game out with your own enforced difficulty settings. Perhaps play the entire game through making enemies of every nation, only using pirate havens as your repair and recruitment posts. Use a different ship to a Royal Sloop if you find that ship makes your game to easy, keep undermanned for land battles to make them more a challenge.

Stick close to enemy ports while sailing to have pirate hunters always be sent after you. Other than that I can't really think of anything. Sorry you haven't found your Pirates to be challenging enough <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

But welcome and perhaps in time there maybe mods or expansions releasing a newer harder difficulty level. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

Aside from the fact that most on this issue was already posted in the thread I opened about game difficulty, I have to say that I no longer feel the game to be too easy. I started a new game on Rogue without the fencing skill and have to admit that now skilled enemies with Rapiers can annoy the hell out of me - don't want to see them on Swashbuckler.

I think I'll restart again and pick fencing once more. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" />

Regarding your question about challenge, have seen all sidequests, found all treasures, became Duke for every nation and got the highest score possible? If not, you might want to try that. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Nevertheless I understand that quite some people feel this game to be too repetetive... I don't, but tastes differ. Since many reviews of the game mentioned this the repetetiveness alone might not be that good a reason to feel cheated though. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

I can see your point, but I think having to self impose difficulty on a brand new game is, well its not what i paid money for, I did the first time (by accident because its far to easy to so) have letters of teh marque from all nations (this makes the game so easy it should be disabled (also in the real world, if you caught having these from 2 diff countries you would probably be done for treason from both)). With a letter of the M you also had to give a % to that country of each prize (captured ship), larger ships tended to have stern and bow chasers (guns that could shhot forward and back) , theres no bias for the larger guns (and therefore heavier shot) that teh larger boats could carry, theres no choice in the guns you can carry, there are so many things that esp for a modern game which have been over simplified to a point where a small ship with someone who knows what there doing can take on a large ship (with the computer being as dangerous as a new born rabbit).

Umm, I think you're looking for a pirate simulation. I don't think SMP ever claimed to be one. You'd probably be better off with POTC and the loads of mods which add more realism to it.

In time some of those might be available for SMP as well, although in my opinion that would defy the original spirit of the game.

possibly, but i was going on the reputation of Sid M, (which is pretty fantastic). Maybe a more simulation based one would be better but even so this game is too easy, realism asside.

I think its possible we could see quite a few interesting mods of SMP! as people attempt to try and take what is a fun platform and maybe push it more towards a certain area and expland on that.

Whilst it would detract from the original idea, it may satisfy some of the people who want more from individual areas of the game. Personally I've found so many different areas to interest me, and like you say with fencing skill not selected, and especially once losing my health, and with it my speed in fencing, those young whipper snappers with their rapiers are a right pain in the ass, especially if your undermanned <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" />

I wonder if it's possible to mod in an entire storyline. That would be interesting, insert a storyline which you have to complete before you retire. And get a special ending if you do. Otherwise you'll simply get a modified `career-ending` that for example states that you failed to fulfill your destiny or something.

Rich, while I certainly don't find the game too be easy, I can see where some (those with more skill than me) might. I can say that even after I "beat" the game (regardless of difficulty level), I needed a break from the game too - after a week, it started calling me again. Hope that happens with you.

This darn game won't leave me alone. That pesky "one more fight, one more sack, one more cruise" factor is KILLING me!

Heh... I just can't let a juicy trade galleon slip by without taking her... Even when I know I shouldn't - I've got more pressing things on my mind, like the treasure fleet, or catching up with Baron Raymondo again, or whatever... But they just skim on by and they're so EASY for me with my nice Brig... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Speaking of that, I just ran across a "fleet" of three treasure galleons just north of the island that Trinidad is on. They were all sailing in a row to the West. They all said they were bound for Cumana. It was July 16, 1669. The problem is, they had almost no gold on them, around 400 each ship.

Based on their location, I am thinking they just arrived in the Caribbean and Cumana would be there first stop for replenishing and such. Thats why they had so few gold... Maybe I need to figure out what time they complete thier round trip and start back to Spain. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Perhaps I should have followed then and noted what they do and where they go <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

** UPDATE**

After boarding and taking all three ships I then continued sailing West. I stopped at the Pirate town just before Margarita. The barmaid told me the Treasure Fleet was heading for Cumana with a load of Gold Bullion. Liar LOL

mmmmmmm............................
I suppose the difficulty is that the player keeps the same ship when starting and trys and keeps all the crew the ship can hold -- alive, and kicking at the end of the time period.

Oh, and do not forget the zoom in and out keys on the numeric pad, the plus and minus keys, and the follow ship view for the game.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

To make the game harder, try sailing everywhere, backwards <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I'd be saying that the REAL challenge would be to hang on and be a curse 'pon the seven seas for 'till you can't do it no more. It should become increasingly difficult as ye gets older.

The start of any Bucc's career is going to be easy, sez I. It's longevity which singles out the truly great pirates.

Rumors... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> Scupper squawk. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/type_1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nk" border="0" alt="type_1.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Cat,

Egads, that does make sense. You went an ruined a perfectly good mad for me. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Sid is such a kidder along with Jeff at firaxis.com.
Anyway, if they are giving you Letters of Marque then it is because they do not want you to attack their Nationality.

It is a little like politics there in this game.

Makes me smile!

And of course, the player can sail against the wind~!
And even not do what the game expects the player should do in the game. Afterall --- you are the central character in this game~!

I have not played it above the second highest difficulty level, so I don't know how much the AI's competency changes. But I think some of the suggestions here about imposing your own forms of difficulty are perhaps apt. As the documentation says, its meant to be an `open-ended` game.

I've played the easiest scenario of course once, and finished (retired as a Magistrate at age 48), and I'm far along in a second game starting at the second lowest diff level. My plan in long term is to try all the different scenarios, and to try differnt nationalities in each one, and also to adopt different tactics in each: e.g., playing "The Spanish Renegade" seems like it might be pretty difficult.
