Is this game repetitive?!

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

It seems to me that no one on this forum who has already played the game has the courage to face their true feeling after `10-hours` of playing, probably because we all have waited too long for it. My question is: is this game repetitive after about 10 hours of playing?! Although I haven't played the game yet (as well as the original one), I have no doubt about how fun the game is after hearing all kinds of reviews. But no matter how fun and how good graphically a game is, as long as its repetitive....you know. Especially when we are talking about half a hundred dollars. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

The one reason I have't bought the game yet is because Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth is gonna be out in 2 weeks, and I only have enough $ to buy one game.

Please help me make the decision. And is this game really that repetitive? Opinions from ones who never played the original version will also be nice (as I myself haven't either). <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

In one word, YES!

It can be very repetitive. Basically your doing the same things, seeing the same places and doing the same things over and over and over.

Now thats not to say that, thats a really bad thing, but seeing the samecut scene sword fights, can get boring pretty quick. This area of the game really could have been enhanced to make me want to go onboard and duel it out with the opposing captain, but instead it just makes me want to shoot off 16 rounds of grapeshot over and over at the opponents ship until they surrender without a fight. What I would have liked is to see sword fights more like in Neverwinter Nights and have it be more freeform, and my character gets better at it the more he does it instead of relying on my dexterity of my fingers to how fast I can push button on my keypad. But instead it feels more like a side scrolling shooter of old. I think there are 4 sequences of dueling on boats, so once you've done them all, you see it over and over again, hence repetitive.

Basically

Start out with one ship and some crew
Go out killing and maming, and adding ships to your fleet.
when fleet reaches 8, sell off ships, go woo the gov's daughter, go seek treasure every now and then, go and find a traitor in a foreign land, and have a sword fight with him, go plundering some more, go wooing some more daughters, go gain more loot through attacking other ships.

Yes it is repetitive, but while other games are repetitive (like Roller coaster tycoon), the other games are repetitive in a good way because they are builders, like constantly building a new rollercoaster thats better than the ones before it. In this game I dont get the feeling that Im bettering anything, just doing the same things over and over.

Im still playing, and I am enjoying the game, but my enjoyment gets less and less everytime I sit down with the game for an hour or so. I dont find it really addictive at all. I didnt play the original, or at least not to my recollection.

You got to remember this game is based on the PIRATES! game from the 1980's. Games in general and game play was simpler

Almost everyone that played it then continued to rave about the game until today when Sid decided to remake it. And of course since so many were still talking about how good the original was they made this remake to play very close to the original. Even through times have change, computer games have change to some extent with the Adventure/RPG games like Morrowind and SeaDogs.

Of course how many of those players of the past could play this game today for a very long time, well we are about to see with the new version.

So anyone buying this game should consider how this game plays. If after playing it once in a short amount of time you don't think you can play it again and again just for the imagination of being a pirate and swashbuckling on the `high-seas` then you may not want to buy it.

This was the true essence of the original game and this version. Placing yourself, your imagination into the game, whether it be saving your family, chasing down and boarding that elusive sloop for the prize or plundering a town. And instead of it ending after playing a scripted game one time like so many games do, it had a very lose story so your imagination could run wild in the game to play again and again like children do with their imaginations when playing pirates.

yes its repetetive, and i agree w/ about the 10 hour mark it becomes that. I dont pretend to make excuses using imagination because i think thats just a `cop-out` for a game. I play alot of games, from RTS's to MMORPG's, and people tend to make the same excuses for the shortcomings of those games as well.

I just expected alot more from a Sid Meier's game, the same guy that did the Civ series. Those had tons of depth and options, but i dont know where that went when they made Pirates. I can only hope they make an expansion pack or the mods the community comes up with adds alot more to it than there currently is.

Yes the gaming world as a whole might have gone past this sort of game.

To the `would-be` buyers of this game, a remake of a 1980's game, ask yourself can I still play an old game today for very long?

If you are not sure if you will like it wait little while, it should come down in price pretty fast.

Actually, I can't get enough of it. What's wrong with being repetetive as long as it's fun? I'm having a great time, and I'm glad we got a game that was based entirely up on what made the original so good. Yes, Morrowind is pretty deep, but oh so boring and slow, and even more repetetive. I'm of the old school when gameplay was the most important aspect.

Tetris is one of the greatest games of all time, and it's also one of the most repetetive games in the world.

OK...

Hmm, so this game can really be repetitive. Repetitivity is not my worst fear, I am only worrying how long I can handle that repetitivity. Like someone said before, Morrowind is actually very repetitive, but I didn't discover that until after at least 70 hours of playing. So is the Sims 2, which really becomes boring after seeing two generations. The key is when I will "experience" the repetitive nature of the game. But with all these said, some repetitive games just never fail to entertain me, like Tetris and Minesweeper.

The best thing that can happen is that they release a demo. Then I would be able to see how long I could do the fun stuff over and over again.

My last question: how deep is this game? Originally I really thought it's a deep game because it's made by Sid. And I too have played Civ3 before. But rhbshop said it's not? Someone please clarify that for me please? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> I certainly wish the game's much deeper than its cartoonish graphics.

I dont know what to say. The game is fun. In a Gamecube sort of way. And yes, I mean that as a compliment. I own Xbox, PC and a gamecube and I play Gamecube the most because the Mario and Zelda games are fun. Fable was fun on the Xbox too.

Pirates is a FUN game. I am 34 years old and I have played the deep strategy games too like Port Royale. But it just was not THAT fun.

Pirates is fun. This is what it is all about.

Yes, the cutscreens and `mini-movies` and such can get repetitive. But, the fun factor and the replay factor are there. I logged at least 60 hours on it during beta and I have put in at least another 15 on the final version. I have played several different careers on varying difficulty levels and different eras. I have tried to see how fast I could make it to Duke in one nationality and not bothered with the other ones... I have tried to see how much money I could make trading. I have tried to worry less about rank and more about quests... I still find the gameplay to be addictive and not laborious. It's simple to get the hang of but holds my interest over the long term. I don't feel like it's work. It's a time sink for sure.

I do wish they would have a demo of it or something. I think that would be a good thing. I also wish they had released it in Europe at the same time as I know that it's driving people nuts over there.

I may find some of the screens repetitive - but not the gameplay or the open ended feel. I sunk hundreds of hours into the original. I did the same with CIV III. And I can sit here and say that CIV III was repetitive too... like how many times are you going to build another civilization and try to make the space race? But, I still play it for some reason. It keeps calling me back. And Pirates! is the same way. Repetitive? Maybe. Fun? OH YEAH BABY!

While I haven't purchased the game yet, the thoughts of it being repetitive aren't neccessarily bad. Some thought SeaDogs was shallow, but I played that over and over, definitely got my monies worth. I currently spend all my game playing time on CivIII, and except for different maps, it's very repetitive, especially since I always play the same civ and always go for conquest. Yet I keep going back to play it again and again.

I guess the key is, does it hold your interest enough to want to keep playing it?

To be honest it doesn't hold your interest to keep playing it constantly. But the beauty of this game is how you'll constantly be revisiting the game, after you played the death out of it the first time. If you spent `20-30`-40 hours when you buy it, you'll spend the same amount when you play again a few months later. That's what made the original so good.

I know some games have that immidiate appeal, and when this instant satisfaction fades - you put it away. But the difference is, those kind of games you pu away for good. These are games like The Sims, POTC (for me), Tortuga, Morrowind etc etc. I'll rather pay 50 buck for a game that lasts 15 hours when it's new, then 15 hours every third month or so for the next 15 years (unless a sequel comes out), than paying 50 buck for a game that lasts me 50 hours, then gathering dust on the shelf, or until you sell it. Pirates! isn't a `one-night` stand. It's hundreds of `one-night`-stands... :p

Yeah, that's how I am with CIV III and the original Pirates. You get a hankering after the initial novelty wears off. For me, I have about 2 more careers left in me before I delete the shortcut from my desktop. Then, in a few weeks, I'll tinker with it some more. And then it'll sit for a month, and then I'll dust it off and lose a whole saturday to it. CIV is like that for me. I can't play it over and over and over `non-stop` for months and months. But it definately has that "one more turn" appeal and Pirates! has that "one more cruise" appeal! I think they hit it right on the head <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Heh, I usually do everything I can to get in a swordfight..I love them. Sure, they're the same scenery and the same attacks, but no two fights are alike because of opponents' skill and your own. I sometimes think people these days expect too much out of a game.

I love the kind of repeatness thats fun in this game (NOT THE DANCING!!!) But the seafights, the swording, the trading, the talking, the sailing, the pirating!

People mentioned Morrowind.. I played that for like 10 hours then it got borring to run from one point to the next without really doing anything.

Sims1/2 even worse.. Cant even play those games for more then 1 hour before i get really bored and delete em.

(Btw I love manager games like Football Manager 2005/Championship Manager Series) I think thats the kind of repeatness thats in this game.. The urge to see how the next time will go out..
For example I played the game out completely, started a new one just now and got into a personal war with Spain (Gonna destroy em and change history!)
