Issues with 1.42 patch

Or should I say things that have not been fixed. The problem with the game crashing when you board a ship is still there. I stopped playing on the 17th September because of this and unbelievably its still there. Every time it happened to me since upgrading to 1.42 is when a ship surrenders and you have no choice of what to do. Another bug that is still there is when you talk to an enemy ship, the surrender options is greyed out but you click on it anyway and they surrender! That just can't be right. Also the game still makes you PC speaker beep sometimes when at sea. Others have said it happens when they press the space bar. It happens to me even if I am touching no keys.

To their credit Akella state in the release notes that in a further patch they are looking at stability issues when boarding! Were they not looking at it recently then or could they not find a fix? Either way its a sorry state of affairs. A two week wait and all I have to show for it are some nice looking trees! :-;

The thing I find particularly disgusting about this is, and I quote the release notes:

Updates and Fixes
2. Bug fixing has been performed across the more prominent gameplay issues.

Okay, you might think. That sounds good until you then read this on the Playlogic forums in the thread announcing the patch:

2. Stability issues associated with attacking or boarding enemy ships will be addressed.

How much more prominent can it get?! That's what the bloody game is about! I would have been happy if they had dumped everything else and concentrated on part of the core gameplay issues that causes CTD's. I think we need a law in the EU that protects us from this kind of stuff, banning publishers from forcing software with "known" serious bugs from ever being released onto the general public. I would have been happy to wait another month or so for it to be released if it meant avoiding this debacle.

The thing that will make such legislation either impotent or onerous is the fact that defining 'known serious bugs' is pretty nigh on impossible without making it so vauge as to be unenforcible. It's easy to say 'ban it' but coming up with a clear, inclusive defintion and a workable enforcement method is much harder.

Even if by some miracle a workable defintion could be developed the net result would be a significant stifling of innovation. After all, if a company is going to make a multimillion dollar investment in a game or other software they aren't going to take any chances of that product running afoul of some 'no bug law' by letting the developers do anything new. They'd make them stick to tried and true cookie cutter code to minimize the risk.

The devellopers are already punished. No serious distributing company agreed to distribute the game outside Russia and they had to use the shitty company as Playlogic. This means even if the game was the only game created for a whole year they would not succeed selling it.

BTW - Did you noticed only shitty games are using SF protection? Does someone knows a good game which uses SF?

Its a good point. Unfortunately X3: Reunion does which could have been great. The major problem with that game is it needs a high end computer to run it properly and with the SF slowing things down even further, the game becomes unplayable. Remove SF from the equation and I'm sure it might work reasonably well. I can think of plenty of suitable acronyms for SF but I'd probably end up just getting banned from this forum.

X3: Reunion was unplayble because of the heavy engine problems and tons of other bugs too:) They needed several months to fix the problems. It is disaster for the sales to release a game which cannot be played at all for several months after releasing.

Oh No! I have Silent hunter 3 too and didnt know that it used SF. Probably explains why it runs so slow at times even on my high end comp. I've removed SF from my system which probably means SH3 will not work again (unless I reinstall SF which isnt going to happen).

Darkstar One uses Starforce, and that game ROCKS!

I actually uninstalled Daemon Tools for that game <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" /> it's that good ;P

X3: Reunion had some incredible potential but it seemed playlogicesque. It was a shame that they ommited the Cockpit infrastructure, and the station parking. I thought those were essential contributions to the immersion of a game.

When i command a titan destroyer, i feel lonely... and I feel as if i'm commanding a bunch of robot spacecraft, not piloted by a pilot...

There lacks a human aspect to X2 and X3. Adding a crew complement that have needs like food, water, and staff would greatly increase the fun and athmopshere.

I enjoyed the ship micromanagement ALOT in games like Battlecruiser 3000AD. I could not believe you actually had officers, crews and pilots on your battlecruiser, who you could send to man the 4 starfighters stationed on the battlecruiser and command them to attack the targets, and to have the turrets auto-target your enemys, and even take over a turret directly. You just jump into a starfighter or a MultiTerrain Vehicle yourself or even GO ON FOOT on a planet! Yes. You could even land on a planet.

You had to buy water, food, medicine, and more to keep your crew happy and alive.

Your pilots get battle fatigue the longer they are exposed to combat. I think that's the most ingenious game ever made. Too bad it was far too complex and had no story. =(

I dream of developing a game where you could stand on a bridge, and interact with your crew mates and micromanage every aspect of your ship... think...

Star Trek Bridge Commander (interaction, Bridge scene and streamlined UI) + Wing Commander (storyline, cutscened) + Battlecruiser 3000AD (Micromangement) + X2 (build/explore/command a fleet)

DarkStarOne uses Tages + Ascaron custom protection(bugz in-game created when the CD check sais not original disc).

X3 has a crack which bypasses SF, but its still there (you can skip the disc check but the code itself is still there) and so are all other SF games.

That'd be why ye need the SF removal tool. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> bye bye SF <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
