jolie rouge vs jolly roger

dma_overrun

Landlubber
Hello folks. I am new to this forum as of 2 minutes ago. I am doing a speech in my public speaking class on the history of the jolly roger and have stumbled across quite a bit of interesting ideas tossed around on various pages. but none of them state any of their sources to corroborate what they are saying. can anyone recommend good references for jolly roger information. I am particularly interested in finding a reference that corroborates the idea the the Knights Templar coined the phrase jolie rouge. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> <b>dma_overrun, </b>and welcome aboard! Have some ale! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":beer" border="0" alt="beer2.gif" />

Ye've come to the right place for history! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Probably the best reference book <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> on pirates is by David Cordingly, entitled "Under the Black Flag". He is considered today's <b><i>preeminent</i></b> pirate historian, and has worked for the British National Maritime Museum. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

On the web? Hmmm... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/type_1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nk" border="0" alt="type_1.gif" />

A quick Google brings up these pages:

<a href="http://www.greyfriars51.fsnet.co.uk/the_jolly_roger.htm" target="_blank">http://www.greyfriars51.fsnet.co.uk/the_jo...jolly_roger.htm</a>

<a href="http://www.skullandcrossbones.org/articles/`jolly-roger`.htm" target="_blank">http://www.skullandcrossbones.org/articles...-roger`.htm</a> (nearly the same as the above article, but with nice pictures)

<a href="http://www.crystalinks.com/skullsidon.html" target="_blank">http://www.crystalinks.com/skullsidon.html</a> (interesting!)

<a href="http://www.bilderberg.org/skulbone.htm" target="_blank">http://www.bilderberg.org/skulbone.htm</a> (some nutty stuff on this page, but the history is also there)

That should help ya! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

thank you very much! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> Amazon shows the index for that book and it looks like he has about five pages or so just on the flags! Far more than I have found so far! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> now off to see if my college's library has it <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> thanks again <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Some of us pirates actually LOVE to read! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

You might enjoy the book Foucault's Pendulum, by Umberto Eco, even though it's a fiction book.

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foucault" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foucault's_Pe...Pendulum_(book)</a>

When I read your question I was reminded of the phrase, "Knights of the Rosy Cross," which has always struck me as an odd sort of title, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> but hearkens to Jolie Rouge to my mind. (or Sacre Bleu! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> )

No better early posting around here than one that gets Lady Cat a Googling! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

on that note I should have dumped all the money I made at my part time job in highschool on yahoo and aol stock <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p2" border="0" alt="pirate3.gif" />

Can't recall where I came across this, but somewhere I remember reading that "`Pirate-protocol`" involved hoisting the skull and crossbones to let a target ship know that they were pirates, and were giving the target ship a chance to surrender, and if they did, the lives of the crew would be spared, however, if the target ship did not surrender immediately, then the pirates would raise a red flag, a jolie rouge?, that indicated that when they were taken, all of their lives were forfeit because they had not surrendered the ship when they had had the chance. Jolie Rouge seems a sort of strange name for a flag that indicates that no quarter can be expected. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mellow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":|" border="0" alt="mellow.gif" />

I am not sure where you originally read it SirChristopherMings
, but I found it in "The Golden Age of Piracy" by Hugh F. Rankin

I don't think I've read that one, but that's one I'll be sure to add to my list of books to read. Thanks! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> <b>jolierougere, </b>and welcome aboard! Have an ale! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":beer" border="0" alt="beer2.gif" />

I think the original "jolierougere" is merely a red flag, signifying "No Quarter Given".

Jolierougere,
Welcome to the site! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

did you see the images on the main site?

<a href="http://www.piratesahoy.net/component/option,com_akogallery/Itemid,36/lang,/" target="_blank">http://www.piratesahoy.net/component/optio...temid,36/lang,/</a>

I was surprised to find that certain pirates, like Christopher Moody, apparently had red flags as opposed to the "traditional" black.

Here's an idea for another smiley Cat, the smiley raises a skull and crossbones, then he looks and shakes his head and raises a red flag and takes out his cutlass! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

thats an awesome idea Christopher <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

BTW jolierougere from the reading I have done <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> for my speech that I am giving this Saturday on the subject <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" /> , Jolly Roger is said to have come from many places. Jolie Rouge being one of them but more probably Old Roger or Ali Raja. Old Roger is what the English called Satan during the "Golden Age." Ali Raja deriving from the King of the East seas. I have got my money on Old Roger. Anyhow if you want a Jolly Roger all you need is a black or white flag with symbols of the time to represent your contempt for death and how your enemys' time is running out. BTW jolie rouge means pretty red and it is said that refers to what the folks before me said "The plain red flag." Good luck <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
