Jungles

Desert Plah

I been searchin, but how do I get there? I've got 1.5 running, and, according to what I've been reading, there should be jungles. I can find none in any of the doors in town. How does?

Jungles are only available in the Supermod. Given your previous threads, I'd guess that the only way you're going to see jungles in AoP is to buy a new graphics card... Which would probably not be a bad idea anyway if you plan on buying any other games produced this century. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> Just make sure you get one with the correct interface; if you're currently using a Radeon 9250, your motherboard probably has an AGP interface of some sort, whereas most cards these days use some form of PCI Express.

I was worried about that…So why are there jungle files extracted during the 1.5 update?

Now wiki and other sources aren't clear (or I'm just thickheaded…) PCI Express doesn't work in PCI ports, does it?

I don't know the whole game development history, but at a guess, the original authors never got round to implementing the code which would have used those files. But I do know that if you've played the earlier game Pirates of the Caribbean, the jungles in Supermod look rather familiar - either the original authors re-used the PoTC jungles or the Supermod authors did. There's even a signpost to Oxbay, which is a town that appears in PoTC but not in AoP!

PCI Express won't work in a basic PCI slot - it won't even fit. <a href="http://zone.ni.com/cms/images/devzone/tut/figure4_pci.gif" target="_blank">Here's</a> a picture of a motherboard with PCI, PCI Express x1 and PCI Express x16 slots. Not shown is an AGP slot, which you won't find on modern motherboards. And you won't get a super-modern graphics card to fit your motherboard if that has an AGP slot, but you should be able to get something which will play AoP, and indeed do a better job of playing some other games than your Radeon 9250. I'm using an nVidia GeForce 7600. My previous card was an GeForce Ti4200, about the same vintage as your 9250, which <i>did</i> work with AoP, but only just - the game slowed down horribly when certain details appeared on the screen.

The Supermod or the original AoP? I presume the former. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
