just a thought

Im back from vacations and now that i played the game again i noticed a little thing....

the cargo capacity is in cwt. Until now i didnt know what was that, but then i searched for its meaning in the net and noticed that a cwt (hundred weight) is exactly 100 pounds. Then i converted a pound to kg (here in Brazil we use kg), so i got about 2.67 kg each pound.

Naturaly, i noticed the cargo capacity of the ships and noticed that my Bermuda Sloop has 765 cwt of capacity, which is about 34 tons, but, as far as i know, a ship of that size can support over than 200 tons, so the cargo capacity of my ship was too low compared with the real ships. And the HMS Surprise has 2500 cwt of capacity, which is about 113 tons, the real HMS Surprise probably was a ship with cargo capacity of 500 tons.

Knowing that im not the only one that want this game to become as realistic as possible, i imagine if it would be a fair idea if the cargo capacity of the ships became changed to match with the reality. I mean, we could make a new Ships_init file with those changes.

What do you all think about this? The hardest part of this is to get an idea of real cargo capacity of each ship in the game.

If you would be willing to work on this, I'd be happy to put it into the game. Provided you do it on Build 14 Alpha 8, of course, otherwise it becomes a bit too complicated.
The main problem I see here is that all ships might be having too little cargo space as far as realism is concerned, but increasing all of that might unbalance the game, because then you can make easy money from trade with any ship.
Why is cargo space calculated in weight anyway? It should be based on volume. If you're carrying something really light, you still can't transport more than what fits into your hold. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

Well, actually, the cargo space is based on volume and weight, but we can all assume that our crew is smart enough to put all the cargo in the ship in a way so that everything will fit.

Another problem that i just though now was the ship speed....the cargo does interfer in the speed, doesnt it? If it does, it would be necessary to rebalance the speed and the weight.

You indeed have a point about the problem of making money so easy, and i still dont have a solution for that, but i will be thinking about it here. Maybe if we make everything heavier (rum, weath, cannonballs, etc) it will be balanced as it is now?

I never said this idea would be easy and simple. And yes, i wouldnt mind try to do this, i had to do my contribution for this site anyway, your build mods saved my life <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thpirateshipff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":piratesahoy!" border="0" alt="thpirateshipff.gif" />

I think the weight of the cargo indeed does influence the ship's speed and you can speed up by dumping cargo.
You're welcome to work on this. More realism and other improvements are always welcome.
I'm sure you will find plenty of help if you need it here. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />
