keeps crashing

Long John

Landlubber
I posted this in the technical forum... but no one seemed to respond to it... so Im hoping ill have a better chance here

Though this may sound trivial to you guys, it's very annoying to me... when I play my game crashes about every five minutes... some places it just keeps crashing, for instance I delivered a buttload of illegal goods to the smugglers in falaise de fleur, the soldiers came, and i pounded their ar**s, now when I want to return to my ship to sail to Redmond to fence off the rest of my goods it crashes... just after the loadscreen before I can manually sail my ship out of the bay...

I followed another persons advice about how to enable errorlogs, but I cant seem to find it... so either I've done something wrong or Im going blind (and my PC too, since I just made a search in windows for the error.log)

my computer should be more than capable of running the game (2 GB RAM, AMD athlon x64 dualcore 4200+ processor, Geforce 8800 GTS graphics card 640 MB RAM)...

Does anyone know how I can find out what the problem is and correct it?????

please help a fellow pirate who can't find a shaman to commuicate with his PC

The error log can be found by calling up the main Pirates of the Caribbean file and opening it.
open engine (config settings) NOT - ENGINE Application
set to the following:

debuginfo = 1

save and close - go to game and play till error occurs
go back to main Pirates of the Caribbean file
open it again
a file called error will be sitting there
open that and it will give you the program and line number in that program that is causing the problem

thanks matey... now Ive got that errorlog... Its complaining about line 759 in seadogs.c ...

RUNTIME ERROR - file: seadogs.c; line: 759
invalid index 132 [size:132]
RUNTIME ERROR - file: seadogs.c; line: 759
invalid index 133 [size:132]

though I dont know what that line says... I was out drinking yesterday... so atm I dont have the patience for counting my way through 759 lines... does this look familiar to anyone?

damn it... now it just crashes while on worldmap... I am on a cargo delivery mission (easy experience and VERY much money :-D)... windows doesnt say anything like, "the program was f**ked up and had to close, do you want to send an errorreport to microsoft..." there is no error.log anywhere... it just stops... has anyone experienced this?????

Ahoy Long John,

Go to: <a href="http://www.s31clan.com/pietersmods/" target="_blank">http://www.s31clan.com/pietersmods/</a>

Download Notepad++ to your general program file.

Open it and load the program your error log is indicating is the problem.

And WHOOPEE the program appears WITH the line numbers - saves hours!

Hope that helps
Short Jack

neat... thanks mate... now i found the line in no time... all the line said was "}"... is it supposed to say more than that? and if not, then i fail to see how it can result in an error...

Im not good at understanding how computers and programs work, but im willing to learn....

O.K. "}" is a main sub-routine closer, or a sub-sub-routine (ends a routine within the program).
Sort of:
{ main program - do stuff
..........{ sub routine - do something else while still in main program.
................................still doing something else
........................{sub-sub routine - doing even more
....................................................still doing even more
........................} finished doing even more - back to sub-routine
..........} finished doing something back to main program
} main program finished

For every "{" there must be a "}"
it will stop you dead if one is missing which is I believe what the error log is saying.
Without seeing your actual run I'm afraid I cannot be of any further help here.

Best I can suggest is re-downloading the program - sorry.

that made sense... good explaining mate...

by re-downloading the program, do you mean reinstalling the entire game??? that takes quite a while...

would it help if you saw the entire file? then ill either upload it somewhere or send it to you by mail or something like that

What version are you running?
13, 14.6, 14.7 ?
It sounds like a sub-routine problem - cos you are running the main program O.K. it seems.
According to version, odd bugs do exists, but these are usually specific to a specific task.
You seems to be progressing the bug forward which is why i suggest a full reload.
However, before you go that far knowing the version may help as that may indicate a "know" bug and "fix"

How long have you been playing? If on main quest where are you.

I am running b14a7, with the POTC musicpack... I havent really bothered playing the main quest yet... I just tossed around plundering and pillaging as i saw fit, and then played alot of merchant missions... It is only sometimes it crashes... and it seems as its different things that make it crash each time... though sometimes I seem to end up in a situation, where i cant leave an island without it crashing... even when I start the game back up, loads my last savegame, it still crashes the exact same place...

O.K. this may sound radical - and it may do your head in !!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Load the game that crashes - go back to the store and sell all your goods.
Then set sail again and see if it crashes.

This <u>might</u> re-set it.

Disclaimer - Do not do this while riding a motor cycle. Do not place computer in microwave. Do not hate me if it doesn't work! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />

lol... I wont hate ye mate... ye've helped me alot already, its worth a try... now Im experiencing crashes when I try to sail into redmond... weird... Ill give it a try next time Im near a store...

it keeps doing it...

still the same errorline...
this is what is written in seadogs.c

void OnSave()
{
seadogs_saveFrom = "";
if(IsEntity(&worldMap) != 0)
{
seadogs_saveFrom = "world map"; //Was "seadogs_sav From" ccc mar20
}else{
int ldLoc = FindLoadedLocation();
if (ldloc >= MAX_LOCATIONS) { ldloc = MAX_LOCATIONS; }
if(ldLoc > 0 || ldLoc != MAX_LOCATIONS)// changed by MAXIMUS: was - if(ldLoc >= 0)
{
seadogs_saveFrom = "location";
SendMessage(&Locations[ldLoc], "l", MSG_LOCATION_SETCHRPOSITIONS);
LAi_SaveInfo();
PostEvent("SeaDogs_ClearSaveData", 200, "a", &Locations[ldLoc]);
}else{
Trace("OnSave() -> unknow character location");
}
}

}

this is line 731-760 (both included), according to error.log the error occurs in line 759... can anyone see the problem?

eey guys, got the some problem...
My game crash when I'm entering Redmond, or leaving Greenford (first were I saw it)/Redmond. With entering Redmond I mean that I go from the world map to the 'Redmond sea'. The error is the same as posted (RUNTIME ERROR - file: seadogs.c; line: 759
invalid index 158 [size:132]). Only the weird thing is that sometimes a can enter Redmond, and sometimes not <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />.

Double post deleted. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

As for your problem: The first thing we need to know is what game version you are running. Usually trouble like this is caused by a faulty installation. The installation process is rather complicated nowadays, so that would be quite understandable.

ty <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Running Build 14 Alpha 7. Without soundpacks or other mods. And the installation, I have done it just like it was in a post somewere (starting from B12>B13>B13u3>B14A6>B14A6+>B14A7 :p ), only thing I can think of is that I saw later that the PostInstall (or something) in the main had to be deleted. Did it, only did not fix bug.

That's odd. It sounds about right. Of course one thing to keep in mind is that the Build 14 Alpha versions aren't proper stable version, especially not Alpha 7. Still I don't have that trouble with my test game version. Try to reinstall the game in the following order:
1) Original Game
2) Build 12 (optional: can't hurt)
3) Build 13
4) Build 14 Alpha 6

Test the game between each step and make sure it works. Then try Alpha 6 and see if you experience the bug you reported there as well.

roger, I will do it this weekend I think <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> . And I got an other odd thing, dont know of it is by everyone, but my exp is like 'struck' on 1 or 2 exp from my next lvl. So I have 14999 exp and need 15000 for next lvl, sink a boat, 'get' 1400 but still total exp stays on 14999. After a while I will get lvl up anyway <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/8q.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":8q" border="0" alt="8q.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

i've seen that. it's related to the new skill mod. you can make your level go up by buying and selling goods in the store. (note: goods, not items) just buying and selling a single unit of something a few times should do the trick.
