Have you changed any of the options? In particular, have you changed the option for pistol ammunition during the game?

The game seems to have forgotten that gunpowder exists. Pepin Bertillon is carrying some ammunition but the game no longer recognises it, which is why it crashes.

Go into "Options" and switch "Ammunition and Powder" back on. In the game, press F11 to reinitialise various things including items. After loading your savegame and doing this, I was able to kill Pepin Bertillon and continue the game.
