Need Help Looting

After i kill everyone after i board on deck I would search the corpse and then fight the captain then searc his room but know I find that I have a limited amount of time before the padlock icon appears in the upperright corner and if I dont hit event button at that moment I wont be able to fight the captain and finish the boarding and then i have to go to load up my save and do it all over again

There shouldn't be a timer for boarding.

If the icon disappears, press the left MB.

Ahoy! your problem is solved by patience;
In cabin fight when you move to chest(s) the 'hand' icon will appear and turn into the 'lock' icon right away after a very short time.
Do NOT press anything when you go near the chest(s) just wait to see which icon you see there. If you see 'lock' icon move away from chest until icon disappears and then go near again. This time it will be 'hand'.
