Man o war?

Merciless Mark

Build mod - Master Gunner
Storm Modder
well i came across that it was possible to enable encountering Man o Wars on these forums(looks like they disabled them to have one climactic manowar fight towards the end)

and i was wondering do i need to starta new game to encounter them?
because im playing on a saved game but i havent met any yet

Well, enabling them is easy enough. Here´s how to do it: Open the file Shipsinit.c with the windows editor or notepad (don´t use Word or anything alike, those programs screw up the .c files!), find the entry for the Man O War (I think in the stock version and up to build 11 there are 11 entries, ten of those for the two "normal" men o war and one for the mow_gub. The number of entries is because every country has slightly different ship statistics). Among other things there is supposed to be a line reading:

refship.canencounter = false

This is the crucial part, it says that you cannot encounter this ship (any ship withsuch an entry) in a random encounter. To enable Men O War for random encounters, change the said line to:

refship.canencounter = true

If you´ve got the build mod, you have to reinit (hit the "i" key), if not, I believe you have to start a new game. And if you don´t have the build mod yet, get it! It improves the game remarkably.

worked real well <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Nice being able to have a MOW as a normal ship lol, and those guns aren to be fooled with lol, i tried boarding a french MOW with my corvette and WHAM got sunk with one broadside <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

Well, I´m glad I was able to help.

Personally, I don´t like the implementation of the MoW- due to the ridiculous size compared to other ships- very much and have it disabled from encounters again. I like the Battleship more, it´s got a definite better look, especially the one in red-brown colours and the gilted ornamentals around the gun ports.

I like using the MOW for supply storage. Each one I capture I load up with men, ammo, rum and wheat and take to one of the islands where I berth the ship. That way when you need supplies and the island town is low, you have what you need berthed at the shipyard. Just have to remember to replenish what you take out. Works out great when you are away from your main island and need supplies. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

I usually use a MOW as storage too, only I have it tag along with me... But the berthing idea is a good one, Meigger! That way I can capture THREE ships instead of only two. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

I think i should tell you that i just captured a MOW with a Frigate at level 9 <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

No i was pounding away like mad at the MOW, and then i started to scream in terror as the mighty Man o War brought its guns to bear,i waited and waited for the devestation broadside to come..... it never came, and wouldnt you beleive it he had only a fraction of its full crew lol so i got close and just as my Frigate started sinking i boarded the Mow, it was a bloody battle i lost many of my fine officers, but we did it, i took the Man o War, so the other 2 fleuts i just blasted away to bits lol <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" />

Heh, all that firepower can be fun! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

After a while, blowing up MoWs gets boring. I always use a Frigate MM or a Corvette MM(Who made those brilliant skins? They're outstandingly beautiful!), and it's a peice of cake.

Yes, I agree, those skins are really nice! I always like seeing them ingame.

I usually sail either my LuggerCT or my XebecCT (okay, I'm biased - but hey, I made those skins because I like them, ha!) unless I need more firepower. Lugger for the beginning of the game, the Xebec for later, and something with a bit more firepower (usually a corvette or a frigate) when the game demands it...

Are you playing on Swash <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" /> ?

*cough* Erm... no. *cough* <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> I'm playing on easiest. I have little self-confidence, you see. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

In the ships.c or ships.init, or something like that, you get sevaral types of MOW, just as you get the sevaral types of battleship. Which is stronger, MOW1 or MOW2? I found for the battleships, theres the type thats outside Oxbay and the types the spanish usually use. The spanish type is stronger (not taking into account the brittish, spanish, french designs and the like) the one outside oxbay is more of a mahogony colour, whereas the spanish is more light in colour, with a blue top.

Another thing about MOWs, is that (Why this happened, I dont know) I came up against a French battlefleet, with just me in my MOW, and then about 5 MOWs, 3 battleships, some corvettes and a couple of other class 2s attacked. it was about 12 enemy ships (V strong) aganst my MOW <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

I sent quite a few of those French ships to the fish, but another MOW cut my sails down, and another finished me. It was quite a battle, and if I was a higher level I may have survived (not won). It was shocking to see an entire French battlefleet all turn and give me a broadside. I had one word. AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> THAT must have been fun!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

I love a battle like that, it's just so FRUSTRATING that you can't take more than three extra ships - which of course leads you to attack the big guys first, to take them first - then it's heartbreaking to sink the others. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Of course, getting sunk, yourself, is no great picnic! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Hu Kwan Do, regarding ship strengths.
As of build 12, ship stats are individually randomized in +-3%. Nation stat multipliers are usually +-5% (and you can see them at the top of ships_init.c). There is usually no difference between ship models in terms of stats, the exception being:
Duke Surak'nar's Xebec Barbarossa
Cat's Xebec CT and Lugger CT
the new Pirate Corvette from the Russian patch ("Prophecy" IIRC).
The new Pirate Frigate from Morgan
The new Light Frigate (using an A&M skin), halfway between corv and frig
and the Super Frigate (which uses frigate1 skin, but acts like a Mephisto).

I think that's it for ships-that-look-like-old-ships-but-have-different-stats.

Certainly the three MOW and the two BB have the same base stats among eachother, it's the random variation that makes one different from another.

That was not my post!
I type so slowly and now it's all gone!
I don't like this new board!

OK, let's try this again!

If you use the Post build 12 Mod Pact, you find the War Galleon which has stats upgraded enough to allow it to go up against any frigate.

While on the topic of MoW, I promised to do this some time ago and am finally getting around to uploading my version of the MoW_gub as the SotL.

I first thought of only doing the re-skin.
Then thinking that some would want all the MoWs available and don't want the MoW_gub replaced so I'll upload an entire ship after testing.

I was thinking of giving it stats equal to the MoW3_44, which is a little faster and more maneuverable than the MoW1, 2 and _gub.

What say ye, any recommendations for stats.
