twas based on a book i saw in a shop the other day, i was off to buy it but it didnt seem well written,

saw the film fer the first time on dvd recently n thought it was a lot better than id expected... Im generaly not a fan of russel crow but I thought he did well and I liked the realness of the thing... even If it had the odd lapse.

plus it has the classic weivel joke hehe im still laughing now

I think he knows because he's been talking to the crew from the Acheron while attending to their wounds. SOMEONE must have said, "Glad you're doing this, we lost our doctor from fever."

I don't know what gave you that idea, but that's dead wrong (unless you refer to a translation). Patrick O'brien's books are very well written. And the movie is actually based on the book series, taking bits from various books and making a new plot for the movie (Neither Master & Commander or Far Side of the World books have the same plot as the movie).

@v_Grimmelshausen: I gather it is either the fact that he heard it from the crew (as Catalina said) or the simple fact that the learned men of the time pretty much knew each other or about each other and might have heard of such a death from their colleagues. I cannot remember how long ago the other doctor was supposed to have died so I'm not sure how plausible the second explanation is...

Yeah, watching the extras on the second DVD really showed how far they went to make the movie as realistic as possible. Even the scenes that were cut out were wonderful! I'd LOVE to see more of the same stuff, but I also fear that they'll only do it if the first movie did very well in the theatres (and I don't really know if it did).
