<b>Microsoft outlines pay-per-use PC vision</b>
Posted by David Meyer

Microsoft has applied for a patent on metered, pay-as-you-go computing.

U.S. patent application number 20080319910, published on Christmas Day, details Microsoft's vision of a situation where a "standard model" of PC is given away or heavily subsidized by someone in the supply chain. The end user then pays to use the computer, with charges based on both the length of usage time and the performance levels utilized, along with a "one-time charge."

Microsoft notes in the application that the end user could end up paying more for the computer, compared with the one-off cost entailed in the existing PC business model, but argues the user would benefit by having a PC with an extended "useful life."

"A computer with scalable performance level components and selectable software and service options has a user interface that allows individual performance levels to be selected," reads the patent application's abstract. The patent application was filed June 21, 2007.

"The scalable performance level components may include a processor, memory, graphics controller, etc. Software and services may include word processing, email, browsing, database access, etc. To support a pay-per-use business model, each selectable item may have a cost associated with it, allowing a user to pay for the services actually selected and that presumably correspond to the task or tasks being performed," the abstract continues.

Integral to Microsoft's vision is a security module, embedded in the PC, that would effectively lock the PC to a certain supplier.

"The metering agents and specific elements of the security module...allow an underwriter in the supply chain to confidently supply a computer at little or no upfront cost to a user or business, aware that their investment is protected and that the scalable performance capabilities generate revenue commensurate with actual performance level settings and usage," the application reads.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Rest of the story here :

that would inevitably lead to people trying to bypass the level limits. probably succeeding too.

you know, i think a lot of people would start building their own rigs, avoiding the adjusted components.

The **** are they trying to start there? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" /> What? You need to pay to use your OWN computer at home? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> .. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" /> ... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" /> ... <img src="http://www.clipartof.com/images/thumbnail/1357.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" /> .. <img src="http://www.clipartof.com/images/thumbnail/1873.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> ..well I hope that Microshit's evil shitting plans shall be thwarted! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

...and besides what the effing hell are they trying to say in that long message? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> I get nothing but a mindless load of gibberish and the idea of having to pay to use your computer every time you use it.. if they want to tell that so that people would understand then just spit it out instead of some long gibberish that I don't get shit about. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" />

Morgan, piecing out computer components and building your own system is something a lot of people do now, that is how I have always built my own. I don't trust the system components most major manufacturers use. They generally use components that are cheaply made and easy to mass produce, The power supply's in those systems are barley able to boot the computer properly, let alone give you any spare power at all for any components that you might want to add later. A lot of consumers though don't have the technical knowledge or spare time it takes to build and test a system, or to search all the component reviews to find just the right equipment that they will need in their system. So they go to Dell and Gateway, Compaq and Hewlett-Packard, and let them do all the work for them. I am sure that is the target group Microsoft is looking at with this patent application. Building your own system however, won't counter the fact that Microsoft will write this code this into Windows eventually. They force pretty much all computer makers now to sell systems with Windows pre-installed, it wouldn't surprise me to see them make deals with Intel and AMD and BIOS manufacturers to hard code this capability in at the chip level.

They don't want you to understand it Deep One, they just want your money. They more confusing they can make it for you, the better for them! It wouldn't surprise me a bit if Uncle Bill is still the man behind the curtain pulling all the strings, his plan has always been world domination. They won't be happy until they have complete control of information. The US Government should have totally dismantled Microsoft back a few years ago when they had those monopoly hearings. Just goes to show you, if you have enough money, you are above the law. George Orwell was only a few decades off ...

Your right, Microsoft should have been broken up a few years back. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> And Big Brother has been here for a while now. Its all about the information.

A bit off-topic, but I wish they'd do the same with Wal-Mart. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Heck, it was done with A&P, so, ya know, what's takin' 'em so long? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Are you referring to this? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

The evil smiley picture with the article is awesome. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Bah! id be switch'n te Linux afore going along with MS crap idea such as that. Vista is failure so gouge ye anuther way.

Well there is an ubuntu alternative capable of running windows applications normally with allmost no emulation enabling better resource use. So far they have support for everything up to DX8 games and practically the newest version of microsoft office XD

All that tightly packed into one nice Lunix package.

But yea when people start to protest microsofts bullshit agenda count me in.
