mod questions for a noob.

the reverend

Landlubber
I hope none of these questions are answered elsewhere, i have had a rummage through the forum and the download centre. Quite frankly most of what i see is like Greek to me (i am not greek unfortunately) and so please bear this is mind when replying. Long pages of code are likely to make blood pour from my ears.

Here goes:
1. How large is the build download? I have a v. small hard drive and dial up.
2. If as i suspect the build will take me until im collecting my pension to download and will make my HD melt, can i download certain parts? I would quite like a smart English naval uniform and a nicely painted frigate. A butler called Henry who calls me M'lud would also be nice but im not holding out much hope.
3. is there an official patch for POTC to at least tone down some of the more annoying bugs?
4. Will doing any of the above need technical knowledge which i do not possess? For the purposes of this question assume i have no technical knowledge.

Thanks in advance matees.

1) 22.6 meg
2) nah its 1 file
3) Yup...for the Russian version but for us , sorry no although it should be said there are gameplay fixes in the mod
4) nah just need to direct the installer to the folder and read the readme thats about it

You don't need the extra textures that are a separate package. They're just `frou-frou`, really. I made the maps on the walls in the town hall and the shipyards "right" (they were reversed) and also made up a NEW map which matched the PotC map to put on the wall instead of the Caribbean map. Nice but not strictly necessary. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Installed the Build will add about 100Mb of data, but some of that is from the extra textures. The Build it still fairly large as it does include new ships and some other new graphical changes.

You could try to use a download manger like GetRight or Go!Zilla and then you can stop and start the download so you can download it over a period of several weeks.

I suggest that you also download the Update as well as I believe that it hasn't been incorporated into the Build and it contains some bug fixes. You will have to install this manually, but if you're not confident of doing that then it is possible to automatically download and install it through the Build installation program.

None of your current saves will work with the Build, so you will have to start a new game.

again responses are prompt and very helpful.
22.6 meg isnt that bad i was expecting in the hundreds, that should be a piece of pie with get right. I just need to find a few more megs on the old HD. Glad its quite user friendly i think im really going to have to make the investment in d/ling this, i want to see those masts topple.
Might do without all the extra textures though. Dont think im denigrating your undoubtedly fine craftsmanship, but i cant say id ever noticed the maps on the walls were reversed. Ill be sure to look. Then again maps aren't Akellas strong point judging by the map i downloaded from the official site.....

Another thing, I suspect that the Build installer might need Microsoft's .NET software installed.
This is free but it could be a relatively large download.

I don't think you need MS's .NET software - but I *think* if you have problems with getting the download, you may need to disable your `anti-virus` software.

okey cokey and away we go. ill download it and see how it goes. I can always come back and bend your ear if im having problems. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

If the `online-update` feature doesn't work, I or someone else can send you it via email or something...
I believe .NET isn't required, that was for Captain Cook's util. This uses Nullsoft's (cf Winamp) install system.

As Sirus_Darke mentions, extracted the build will take up a good deal of space. Without the extra textures you're still probably looking at 50 or so (plus the 22mb installer that you can delete afterwards).

And indeed, please don't hesitate. That's what our ears are for. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
