Modding Help

I must be pretty annoying now, but where should I start if I want to learn how to mod a game. Perhaps being totally inexpirianced this maybe an impossible question to answer but we were all inexpirianced at some point and look what you have become! Expert build makers. So where should I start, e.g what should I try and look at and explore before anything else
