Modern Naval Warfare

I was wondering if anyone has heard of any good modern or WWII naval warfare games around?
(Other than the submarine ones, that is. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> )

My brother used to have one long ago, called <i>Fighting Steel</i>. I think it was on the old DOS format, but it was a great WWII surface naval game. It had all the major ships of WWII; most battleships, a lot of cruisers and some destroyers. Sadly, there were no carriers to my knowledge. You could play as any of the 4 countries (US, England, Germany, Japan) and you could fight any of the other countries you wanted, regardless of historical allegances. It also had an in-game editor so you could design your own engagements. And if I remember correctly, it even had multi-player capabilities. I was wondering if there was anything like that available now.

There was an old naval game on the Sega and Super Nintendo systems around 1990 called P.T.O. which I thought was very good. It took place in the Pacific and you had a choice of playing either the US navy or the Japanese Navy during WW2. You could command carriers, battleships, cruisers, destroyers and subs if I remember correctly. And it was historically accurate, that is the Japanese player started out with more carriers at his disposal in the beginning of the game but the US had more being built later on. And I believe you could choose what you wanted built later on as well. You could also fortify islands and attack others that were held by the other side. It really was very well thought out. I doubt that game is still around but I searched around on the Internet and found this site if you are interested in checking it out.

That sounds like an interesting game; too bad it never came out for PC. Only that seems to be more of a strategic game, like "Axis & Allies". I was thinking more of a tactical one, like a 20th century version of "Age of Sail"*.

What I would really like to find is an updated version of "Fighting Steel". As I remember, it was almost like a ship simulator! You could switch from 3rd person to 1st and be on the flying bridge of the IJN Yamato or the HMS King George. You had direct control of speed and direction of the ship, her main and secondary batteries and torpedos. And you could even pick the colors of your ship; including different camo patterns. Combat might take place at night or in rough seas. You got to see the turrets rotate and your guns fire. If you made a hit, the camera would quick-travel to the enemy ship and you got to see the damage caused. Of course, if you got hit, you would see the same thing in reverse. Guns being destroyed, rudders getting jammed; tangled metal and fire everywhere. It was all quite realisitic and very cool.

*I'm sure you remember that rather horrible sailing game from about 5 years ago. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Hi Mary Read,

how about "Pacific Storm" and the forthcoming addon "Pacific Storm: Allies". Set in the Pacific during WWII and until 1948. It has a strategic and tactical part.

If you like it more modern take a look at "Dangerous Waters".

battlestations Midway is out and about but its not the greatest ..check the reviews..I only played the demo .

And PTO II was released for PC ..and snes and genisis .

I have two SNES carts need batteries though .

Pacific Storm is interesting for a while, but the RTS battle strategy part is pretty shallow... I myself am waiting for PT Boats: Knights of the Sea, by Akella... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Why you like bugs ?? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

I have PTO on SNES and Sega Genesis (remember when those two ruled the game world?) but haven't played it in years. The Sega console I have is the CDX one that plays both cartridges and cd's.
