Move to Age Of Pirates?

Armored Ear

Landlubber
Once AoP is released to us, are you planning on staying with Potc, quitting, or moving on to AoP ( I'm sure it will need modding)?

I definitly don't want to quit. And I would think it quite a shame if our modding efforts for PotC would be lost and we'd have to start all over again for AoP. So I would either want to add our mods for PotC into AoP or stick to PotC. It probably depends on whether AoP will be as moddable as PotC and whether some of our "old" mods can be made compatible with AoP.

I have tons of plans for PotC that I'd like to realize if I can ever find the time. Many of them deal with landlocations (jungle exploration, sneaky thievish or secret service missions) Those can't be transfered to AOP cause there are FAIK no landlocations (except towns who offer nothing but bare shipservicing)

I am not sure if I'll ever switch to AOP at all, the first reviews of it sound bad. Looks like AOP has LESS features, quests and locations than Potc, not to mention the SLiB mod or the ever growing Postbuild pack. Should I quit all that just for slightly better looks? Or only because AOP is "new"?

It might even be easier to mod the good new AOP features(if there are any) into PotC than vice versa.

I hate to spoil anyone's anticipation, but Akella sure has a long record of disappointing the expectations they have raised <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> And they never much bothered to patch their bugs, or support the modders who tried to fix them <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

I could not have said it better!
I'll be sticking with POTC .... modded of course!

While it seems there certainly must be some talent at Akella for putting POTC together in the first place, I think ultimately their stuff is always released prematurely, and then they are either not interested or not allowed by management to go back and revisit the product once it's been released. They probably don't see any money in it... I'd doubt that AOP will even hold a candle to the incredible work this community has put together. I can see it now - we'll all see it and think - gosh, this one really had potential, that's a real shame they didn't finish it! I don't think I'll be spending any money there unless the reviews all prove me wrong.

The teamwork, the playtesting, the creativity and sharing of ideas that has gone on here at Pirate's Ahoy couldn't possibly be matched by a new game title that surely will be rushed out the door. Cheers to all that have been a part of the PoTC build mods, and long live "open source" on the open seas! I'll cast my lot with PoTC and the Mod team anyday!

Actually, now im quessing a bit here, but i think most will migrate to AOP. I have a feeling that most of the mods will be ...somewhat compatible with the new storm engine and for the looks alone people will move.

Other than that there is going to be a brand new community of modders who will come out and 100x's new players sceaming for AOP mods.

So i think we will move. Im happy either way though <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

i think i'm going to buy AoP but then ill ask if somebody can convert the ship models to make them compatible fot PotC isn't that sweet of me <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

I dont know but i think that PotC has come a long way and still could go a long way. I will buy Aop pirates but the way PotC is coming ill probobly spend more time with PotC. The only thing in Aop im really excited about is multiplayer and im hearing it isnt working?

AoP doesn't look dramatically different as far as I've seen so far, I'd say it's a bit disappointing in fact. If the sailing model is greatly improved I'd think about it.

I've only just purchased PotC and applied B12 so plenty of life left in the old barky yet. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

same here

I definitely won't move to Age of Pirates!
I love Pirates of the Caribbean - only with Build Mod of course. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />
I bought the game just two weeks ago and I am totally charmed by it.

1. The modding capability is awesome.
2. I like the sea combat, because it is not too predictable and repetitive as it was in Port Royale, Port Royale II or the new Sid Meier's Pirates!.
3. The graphic is sooooooooo beautiful! I just like to watch the sunrise, sundown, moonlight on the water or the vegetation. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />
4. Port Royale I+II and Sid Meier's Pirates! very quickly get boring. Pirates of the Caribbean does not, because the game concept is far more elaborated. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />
Maybe that's the reason why we have to read the dialogs and do not hear high quality speech. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> Perhaps Akella just spend more time on the concept and graphics than on the sound and controls... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> in a ratio of concept and graphics: 90%, sound and controls 10%... Just William Kidding, aye! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />
5. I totally agree with Couch Captain Charles (already awarded Armchair Admiral? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> ), Pieter, Capt. H.M. Murdock and all the other mateys, who will stay at POTC! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
6. Build Mod forever! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

The problem with switching to AoP is still the same - CODE IS CLOSED, and protected by SF.
As I already said <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net/index.php?s=&showtopic=6960&view=findpost&p=142174" target="_blank">here</a>, there is mod, or should I say Add-On, already coming from russian modders. As it is "blessed by Akella" and the plan is to sell it, I doubt it very much, that the code will be opened before release of this add-on. So our modding is basicly limited to changing textures and skins <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
BTW AlexusB has confirmed that the add-on will be in english only...

Heh, guys... The AOP walks in a totally different way than yer mods.
So, its a big improvement of POTC, but it lack 99% of the features U guys added to this game.
I have a russian friend who has the game. (because they released the russian version in december)
An example:
The textures are very good, and the little sailors textures, when you close up with the camera in 3rd wiev, looks totally stunning.
But in the first person sailing, the little guys are vanished, just like in potc.... Even with these good textures, they think, its need to hide' em.
(at least, in multiplayer they dont present at all)
So, the AOP is closed, and offers totally different things, than U guys. Its not make sense to mod that, because all the work needed to re-done then, start it all the way again, or rework a HUUGE amount of code yet present for potc. The only really good thing is the multiplayer... Hmm... But there is a slight chance for someone to take a look in that, and some really experienced coder can import it.... Its not a big deal, just sea battle. No wandering around, no port, or land walking, trade.

But... I think its not that hard to unpack the program directory. The compiler still exist, so, the game files ISNT DECODED!!!! (at least theres a big chance ) Because ini files all refers to a programs directory, which not exist, and theres a weird programs.dat and programs1.dat... Theres a chance, that they only packed, and protected somehow. I think, because what StormRider Just said, to let some choosen people mode it more easier.
Its not that simple, to give away, and rebuild a source code every time they want someone to modd....
So, I think, its uncoded like pOTC and it can be accessed somehow. However, This friend of mine lives here in Hungary, just got the game from his homeland, so i can regurarily check things in it.
