Music in Direct Sail Mode

Oberleutnant

Powder Monkey
Storm Modder
I know that the music for direct sail mode comes from the list under "spokplavanie" in PROGRAM/sound/ALIAS/music_standard.c and so I have added additional lines to it for increased music variety, but I have noticed that once I set sail in my ship it will pick a song at random from that list and then continue to loop it...forever. Well until I go to shore or map mode. I've been looking at PROGRAM/sound/sound.c for any ways to make the music play randomly after the first song instead of looping it. I came across the very first line "#define MUSIC_CHANGE_TIME 0" and thought maybe that would do it, so I changed it to 0. I did some tests and nothing actually changed, so im guessing this line of code does not apply to the direct sail mode. I tried playing around with the code that tells the game to play from the "spokplavanie" section, but I wasn't able to get anything to work. So my question is, "Is there a way to get the game to play different tracks in direct sail mode without having to go to shore etc?" I've also come up with an interesting theory to bypass the need, if its not possible. I may compile my own batch of sailing music tracks into one .ogg file. The only downside would be adding new music or deleting some that I tire of :(

I think to create a big .ogg file with different tracks is the easiest way to hear different music in direct sail mode. Another way is to go to the captains cabin, crew quarters or cargo hold than switch back to ship deck with fast travel. When you enter the ship deck again you will hear another track from your spokplanvanie folder. It only take a few seconds without going on shore or switching to world map.

Another way to hear different music without changing your location is a little bug ;) .

Just press F2 and open your character or ship menu. Then click on the name of your character or your ship and violá ...the music track changed and you hear another music. You don't have to change your name just press esc and you are back on deck with new music.
Don't know why changing the name changes the music as well but it does. :shrug
And it can be used to change the music quickly. ;)

I've been working at making an extensive playlist of sailing appropriate songs, not quite finished yet because college has been taking a lot of my attention away, especially since I will be graduating in a month (it's getting incredibly hectic hehe). Once I'm finished I don't mind sharing it on the forums for anyone else that would be interested. It'll contain some songs from the music packs that are offered already, like POTC and Cutthroat Island, but also some others that I found online. I will also make a few sets of the same music compilation in different orders so it has the illusion of being random. At the moment I only plan to do the sailing music, but I will probably end up doing the battle music and others in time as well.

For the moment, I like your name changing idea. I knew that clicking on the name changes the music as I have accidentally done it so many times before, but it never occured to me to use that as a track changer during sailing...so thank you :)

I'm still working on a complete mega music pack by my self, too.
Right now my music pack includes 192 music tracks, and it's included the complete soundtrack from "Cutthroat Island" in the 2 disc extended version (Many thanks to Pieter that he has loaded it into his music database) and the complete "Pirates of the Caribbean - Curse of the Black Pearl" soundtrack.
I have also found a lot of music for the taverns and sea working songs for the ship deck.

Maybe we can combine our music packs to bring out a really huge pirate music playlist that give the game a really Hollywood styled atmosphere.

Here is my actual playlist:

This is complete title list of the “Mega Music Pack”. Most of the environmental music came from Movies or Computer games.
The tavern songs were mostly old shanties or sea working songs as well as traditional folk songs and music.
I know that these songs are not historically accurate and were probably not sung at the time of PotC on the ships. These songs maybe were sung 100 to 150 years later on sailing ships because some of the songs relate to events that took place much later in history like the French revolution (1789), the Napoleonic era or the Black Ball Line (1817). Some of them where songs from american whalers. But they mostly were sailor songs from the era of sailing ships so I think they fit well as tavern songs and music.

Ship Deck Songs by Tom Sullivan and the Crew of the brig “Unicorn”
The working songs were recorded onboard the brig “Unicorn” with the singer Tom Sullivan and the crew of the “Unicorn”, all of them are sailors in profession and no professional singers. Tom Sullivan was the only professional singer on the ship. The capstan, pump and halyard sounds that can be heard in the background were not inserted later. These are the original ship sounds.
These songs can be heard when you moored and walk on your ship deck but only on day. In the night there was no singing on the ship. The sleeping sailors will thanks for that :D.

i have a doubt your plan will work, since there IS in fact a limit to the amount of music files you can add to the game. they all get loaded at once, and the engine can only load a specific amount of data. you can try though.

Oh, this wasn't a plan. It is almost ready. Only a little bit more finetuning. I don't have to try any more cause i tested it since my first music pack (the Cutthroat Island Music Pack) in 2006 and i can assure you it will work flawless for me right now. All the music plays as it should. In portugese taverns and towns you hear portugese music, in spanish towns and taverns you hear spanish music and so on.
And until now i haven't any problems with the amount of music. Don't know where the limit is but i think i didn't reach it right now.

The pack weights now 550 Mb and it works fine.
Are you sure that there was limit?
I never had any problems with those strange limit.

Very impressive list Jack Black, my music pack is mostly just an idea at the moment and I certainly don't have as many songs as you. I haven't actually meshed anything together into one .ogg file yet, and the songs I have so far are only meant to listen during sailing. I look forward to trying your music pack once your done with it. It'll be a while yet before mine is finished.

Yes, i need a little more time, too.
I'm looking for some few more songs that can be played in the pirates taverns. There are not much songs that fit with those Grog guzzling and stinking bunch of pirate sailors. :cheers :drunk
"Blow the man down", "No Purchase, no pay" and "15 men on a dead mens chest" are pretty good but not enough. :mm

I think there's no limit on the number of music files anymore.
That used to be the case when it was still the old INI system, but it shouldn't be the case anymore with the new .c files system.
