the music files i added, are much larger than the originals, but they are only a bit longer. is there any way i can reduce the size of the files in ogg? it is often a difference of about 10 MB or more, which is rediculous.

Resample them to a lower bitrate and re-export them to ogg. You may have them at a higher quality, which increases size considerably. Its like making an MP3 in 256, vs 128 or 96.

ok, there's another problem, which is only a minor one, but the music playing in the game is very soft, not too soft to listen to, but soft. what's the problem? the sound level was set to the max in the converting program, but it's still softer than the original.

I'm not sure about that one, sorry. Its been ages since my sound working days, and things may have changed considerably in the industry since then <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Softness sounds like a format issue. Much like setting an image output to 300dpi vs 72dpi makes an image that looks smaller.

If you can find a way to view the 'settings' of the current OGG files (format, bitrates, amplitude, etc), then the answer may be in there. However as I recall with this game... sound files (and possibly music too) are VERY TOUCHY to make for! Took me forever to clean up the 'open chest' sound, which resulted in never getting it working right, so I gave up. Heh.

music isn't that hard to put in. just don't put to much in there (as you warned).

OGG files like MP3 are Lousy files - in that you loose sound quality when dealing with the medium - taking an OGG file, reworking it and makeing another OGG file out of it will result in the second version being of lower quality. This depends very much on what hardware(soundcard)+software(music related) you are using. with a good setup you wont notice the difference so much etc.

If you want to solve your problem i'd do a google on the subject - sound is quite technical(from what i've seen of it so far) but you may be able to find an easy answer on dedicated sites for musicians?

Once my new sound card(EMU-0404) is in and my software set up i plan on having a go at tweaking many of the sound files. One thing that i find lacking in PotC are the sounds of the sea when you are sailing. We can hear the sails fine, and the odd creak of the timbers -but the sea is virtualy silent. It is there - just seems to be set at such a low level compared to anything else? So the plan is to isolate and increase those sea sounds.

If i like the EMU and its software/results/ease of use - i need to go up the range as its part of my planned sound studio. PotC will be my guinea pig <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

you can hear the sea fine if on land and in a sea location, but on ship it all goes a bit flat. If i cant easily raise the levels in the current at sea files, i'll play with chopping in and blending the sounds from the land(near shore) sections and see if that might be a way. I really miss the sound of the sea being carved by the hull of my ship <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

uhh...i dont know whether i'm going to get eaten alive for this or not, but could anyone convert the song Davy Jones, from Dead Man's Chest?

i dont have it i'm afraid - google?? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

i could send it to you via PM or through E-mail. which do you think? if E-mail, send it to me via PM and i'll get back to you ASAP

don't worry nelson, i'm on your side! i could convert it, but most likely be unable to send it. it's not too big, but for some reason i can't send stuff anymore. sometimes i can, but it rarely happens. it depends on the person i send it to.

Why not downloading it from FTP Server?
If you wish I can put it on the FTP in the "Jack Black" folder. And you can download it from there. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

sorry i'm a bit of an idiot here. should i upload the file to that topic? i've read the text but it doesn't really clear anything up for me.

The FTP is a place where you can upload files to. The easiest way to access the FTP is to get FTP Commander from the modding tools page on my site and use that. All settings are already correct in there, so it should work pretty easily.

The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a software standard for transferring computer files between machines with widely different operating systems. It belongs to the application layer of the Internet protocol suite.

ok, if i click connect, i get a window. what are all these things i should fill in? i know it sais clearly what it is, but i largely don't know what they are. in the account window, should i fill in the account i have on this site? what should i fill in at the FTP server box? and which user ID do they mean? is the password i should fill in the password of the user ID or that of the account name? i'm completely lost here.
