My first impression from playing Build 13

Rad

Privateer
Hi, all and especially modders. I am just playing Build 13 about 15 hours now and I can tell I am very pleasantly surprised. I think I can say that this Build 13 is the best what I ever play in all the history of modding PoTC. Thanks mates for your really good work. There are some minor thinks as always that I don´t like too much but nothing inportant so far.

One thing I still can´t use to are the cannons´ calibers of some ships. There is for example some new type of frigate designed from Pinnace. But she can be armed only by 4 pound long barrel cannons. And there is several similar examples. It seems to me a little comic especially in the case of such a big ship.

The other thing is still absence of signboards for backsmith and tailor ´s shop so that one must roam and look foor them.

Flags of some ships are very and unnaturally large and they are the of same shape and size on all masts and on bowsprit too. And on various historical paintings you can see many flags which were narrow and long in combination with classic shape flags.

And if the sidesteps could be reprogrammed a little yet as a real sidesteps and not as a strange movement to the sides it would be fine. But I think it isn´t so important because it is much beter to have any movement than no movement at all.

And as usually I have constantly problems with my reputation. As I could see this reputation was reprogrammed somehow lately but it is still too severe. In the past nobody communicated with me in shops and shipyards only if I was the Terror of the Seas and now although I am only Swindler, nobody communicate with me in the cases when I don´t have relevant letter of mark.

When I will discover anything else I would write it here.

I am quite pleased to hear that you find the Build 13 Beta working well. That has to be about the first time ever that you find a Pre Build 13 version to work good. It is indeed a fact that the Build 13 Beta version is the best-working Pre Build 13 version ever to be released, so that is no surprise. The final Build 13 should be even better. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

That is probably one of Captain Hawk's ships. He made several ships that are converted war ships used for trading instead. Because they're not warships anymore, he set the maximum cannon calibre lower. Some cannon-stuff will be changed in the final Build 13. Hook did some work on it.

Pirate_KK has recently sent me his latest code changes and included in that are fast travel icons for blacksmiths, tailors and churches. Captain Hawk made several ships with large flags added. You should post that comment to him, I think. He is the inly one who has much knowledge about rigging and flags, I think. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

The AoP models, Blaze and Beatrice, have proper sidestep animation. To add proper animation to all other models as well, we'd need to add a new animations and we don't know how to, so there's nothing much we can do, unfortunately. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Hi, Pieter. Please, what about flags concerns could you hand over my remark to Hook? I don´t know him at all, so, I think for you it would be much easier and more operational. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

Don't worry Rad, Hook tends to read everything on the PotC forums. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I haven't done anything to raise the low caliber on those ships, but I have lowered the caliber on a couple of them. Most of my changes have added a bit of crew to the maximum crew so you'll usually have enough to man the sails and cannons.

Hook

Hi, Hook. I think problem is in that the ships with low caliber don´t have any chance against the ships with higher caliber and I think probably nobody will be using them in game. And I think it would be good somehow try to follow historic data. But not from Napoleonic era. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

Four pounders have an advantage in load times. They're quite fast. And a 4 pounder can still shoot the sails out of even the largest ship with chainshot, then either sail away or get into a position to fire on the enemy where he can't return fire.

So you can't sink a ship with 4 pounders very easily. You can still take out most of his sails, then go in close and use grapeshot. Since most of the ships limited to 4 pounders are intended to be merchants, I'd either use them for companion ships or find something else to sail.

I've been doing quite well in a sloop armed with 6 pounder long guns against even the largest ships. Just can't take on a fort with that tiny ship. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Hook

PS. It helps to have my mod to make turning slower when you have more sail damage. Othewise some of those ships can still turn and fire on you, even if they're totally dismasted.

Hook, but a frigate with 4 pounders ??? And because Pinnace is quite a big ship if you would rework it into powerful frigate with about 40 - 50 24 pounders it would be great adding and variegation of the game for many people. She would be powerful and with large cargo space, such a small battleship. I think there is needlessly to much almost identical ships with a very small deviations. In the 17th century there was so many great ships - newer types of galleons or Dutch type ships highly decorated and nobody is able or willing to create any of them - for example Sovereign of the Seas, Solei Royal, San Felipe, Vasa, later Victory and so on. I know it would be difficult task but instead of 10 types of almost idenical brigs, schooners, and so on I would prefer a few or even one great ship. And I think the current line ships and war ships in the game are really awful and they don´t have almost any reality in themselves. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

I think the only frigate that carries 4 pounders is the White Waller Frigate. There are a lot of other ships in the game.

I know we have at least one Pinnace of War, but it carries 12 pounders.

The difficulty seems to be that it's a major undertaking to create a totally new ship, while reskinning an existing one is fairly simple. So you have a lot of similar ships in the game.

In any case, there are a *lot* of ships in the game. You should find plenty of variation.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
If it indeed is the White Waller Frigate the problem lies with: The low calibre guns on that ship are deliberate. It was an attempt by Captain Hawk to add a ship to the game that would make enemies flee because of the <i>number</i> of guns, while, in fact, she doesn't actually carry very big guns.

Yes Pieter and Hook I see it, I don´t mind it and nothing happens here. I only wanted to write what I mean about that. Unfortunately, it would never cross my mind to sail such a ship. For me it is a little unexploited potential in such a ship. Although at least once I could try it anyway. But what about appearance of this ship concerns I like it, it looks really nice and I think Hook have done a very good job. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

By the way Pieter, somehow I can´t find in BuildSettings.h where to adjust ability to reload pistols with drawn sword. Can you tell me where is it approximately ? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

It was a deliberate choice, but you can easily change it in ships_init.c. No new game required: Just press the key in the game after you made the change.
BTW: It was Captain Hawk who made the ship.

I'm not at home right now, but it's somewhere in BuildSettings.h. Open the file, press Ctrl+F (Search) and search for "reload", "gun" or a similar term. You should be able to find it. If not, post again and I'll tell you where to find it as soon as I can, which means as soon as I am at my computer at home again. Merchants trade pounds from guns to get more cargo hold capacity. Its a trade off they make, and thus the merchant style ships arn't designed to work with bigger caliber guns.

These ships are good for companion ships to 'hold your loot', which you command the warship in your fleet.

Hi, Jason, it´s interesting information. And Hook I found this function it in the BuildSettings.h and exchange it at last. Sometimes I seem to be blind. Probably I am too old already. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Another observation that I have from playing is my very fast improving in the game. For that reason I decreased default 10 points per level at original value 5 points per level in my game. This way game will be longer challenging for me. When I have all the characteristics at 10 level in the half of the game so the playing somehow stop entertain me. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

And I ponder although I like original music very much I would like to try music from PoTC film. I have a looked into BuildSettings.h what about music concerns but I don´t understant whether I have to change there anything from default settings. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

And those unhappy cannons, one of the most important matters in game. I am still not completely satisified with them. The max. ranges seem to me still too low, so I changed the value from 1 to 1.5. I am interested what will happen.
And both elevations seem to me too small for my taste and comfortable playing so that I increased them in both cases from 1 to 1.99. I will see what will happen. The value 1.5 works well.
And what about the sound of cannons concerns. I must say I don´t like any current sound. Todays default Jack Rackham sound seems to me very unnatural and as it would be emanated from a tins. The second alternative sound seems to me better but I think the game would deserve something beter yet. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Hook did some modifying of cannon reload time code, but this code won't be in Build 13. The max ranges are too LOW? They're already rather far. And the accuracy at such ranges is rather bad. But you can change the ranges somewhere in the code without muh trouble, I think.

The sound depends on the cannon calibre. Small cannons have small sounds, big cannons have big sounds. If you don't like it, set JRH_CANNON_SOUNDS (or something like that) off in BuildSettings.h.
