My junk's just all KINDS of messed up...

Things have gone from bad to worse as I've tried to fix a bug that appeared out of nowhere the other day... Two full reinstalls, working fine up to a point, then they just take a dive, in different ways and at different places. What I get now is the game won't even start, as during the small "initialization" screen with the waves on it I get a "microsoft C++ visual runtime error," or something, resulting in an "abnormal program termination." But it worked fine five minutes ago.

Recap: I've been playing a lot with the textures but had no problem there, till I accidently wrecked a .gm file and Cat kindly sent me a replacement copy, but that didn't fix my problem of a blank screen every time I started a new game; saved games worked fine, and sometimes a saved game was loaded as "new."

So I reinstalled from my game disc, then installed the build again... the only old material I carried over were my character models/textures and some sound files. So it gave me the same problem. So I reinstalled it all again...

This time things were fine... a certain questionable texture even loaded without problem... and then on another new game load it went kaput. The blank screen. I tried to fire up the mod helper to debug (when I did that the very first time, on my initial game files, it returned a <i>1 megabyte text file</i> of errors, mostly repeated lines of what is to me gobbledygook) but it won't even recognize any of my three copies of engine.exe... worse, after I tried it, my engine.ini text file was wiped clean. So I pasted into it all the info from another of my copies of the file, and now I get that wonderful abnormal termination.

halp! please...

ugly mess ye got thar mate.I'd suggest ye do a fresh install O POTC,,test it to be sure, reload build11 test it,make a backup copy O' POTC,reload anything else one at a time an test each one before loading the next one to find out whats cause'n yer problem <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Yikes... Yes, do what Skull suggests, and make sure you even download a clean copy of Build 11.0 too - perhaps something was corrupted in your download that can be fixed with a new download.

Sounds icky... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> Hope you can straighten it out! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

On my third reinstall... everything was fine till I modded a character texture, replaced the original file with it, and edited characters_init to play as that modded texture (this has NEVER given me a problem before unless I accidentally saved a texture with some wrong parameter, but things would be right again after I fixed that). Then I get the same problem -- blank new game screen, but old games load fine and after the second attempt to load new it loads a saved. Even after restoring the original texture and changing my starting character back to Animists1, I get a blank new game screen.

Oddly, modded character textures already in the folder will load fine. At least, the one I already had in there. I hadn't tried playing as that texture.

I tried error check once, on this current install, and it just sort of hanged, so I forced the game to quit. But it generated no report so I guess nothing was wrong. I've reinstalled just the build, and things've been fine... Other people can wear my new clothes, but I haven't tried wearing them myself yet. Why would changing my own starting character wreck the game?

Usually if you "abnormally" terminate the program there will be no error report. Doesn't mean nothing's wrong, it just won't generate the report. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":huh" border="0" alt="huh.gif" /> It's annoying, but it happens. Don't ask me why. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_twisted.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_twisted.gif" /> (I hate computers, LOL!) <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Alan, I have no real clue as to why you're getting this error - it's baffling to me, but then again, (and I keep saying this, LOL) I don't know everything. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

So everything was fine until you started to use that new skin? And you see other characters in that skin but you cannot don it yourself?

There *has* to be some kind of mixup in the characters_init file...

Are you using PotC Mod Helper? That also gives a good error log with the other logs thrown in for good measure. SOMETIMES it will spot something the regular error check will not.

I sure hope we can get this tracked down for you. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Don't know fer sure, but change'n yer character might screw up the game due to the change clothes Mod,ye might wanna add the character you wanna use in the change clothes files and choose it from Malcolm on the tuturial deck <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

That's what I'll try next, adding my `in-progress` skins to Malcom's dialog. The number of choices he gives you is so drastically reduced now...

And the Mod Helper is what I'm using, Cat. But you mentioned in another post somewhere a dialog patcher program, that you used for the FBQ?
