n00b questions :)

rkzR

Landlubber
Hi,

I've been playing this game since 2 days and I really like it.
But I'm having some difficulties.
By the way, I'm playing on the PC without any mods installed.

Questions:
-how can I drink a potion?
-where should I invest my ability + skillspoints (low level)?
-what are good tactics for winning swordsfights?
-how can I make my officer use a gun?

I really hope you can help me.

Hello rkzR,

drink potion by pressing RETURN & choose a bottle

ability/skillpoints: FENCING is never wrong & LUCK is good for a lot of things I think
let your officers take care of gunning sailing etc

swordfights: just keep blocking all the time & hit directly after an enemy hit
also jumping a step backwords & fire your pistol

face an officer & press space (I think) there is an interface (picture with 2 arrows). Give a gun to the officer.

Now get the MODS! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" />

I'm sorry, but I still don't get it <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />.
I changed the controls so it's more comfortable to play for me.
Could you be so kind to say what commands are enter and space?
Actually, I've already tried all of my commands (primary land), but I don't see any of those 2 menus.
Thanks for the tip about fencing btw <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />.

The "Enter" button brings up the quick-action command menu at the bottom of the screen, which you can use for quickly going somewhere, but also for transferring stuff with your officers. The spacebar is the button also used by default for attacking with your blade.

Make sure to get your swordfighting skill to 10, its a must in the stock game.
also, its better to hire officers at low lvl instead of high, since than u can lvl them with the stats u want and abillties that actually help.

The best tip I can give you for swordfights is this..

Scrap the default controls straight away, they are horrific and make the game much harder. I cant rememebr what the defaults are exatctly but you should change them to this:

WSAD For movement.
Right Click for Attack
Left Click for Block.

That should help you out.

May I hijack this thread slightly and add some n00b questions of my own?

1. How fast does time run in the game? Is there some way to change this? Is there some way to "rest" or something to make the time pass faster (like if you need to wait until morning? I've just got to Redmond and it's dark and I can't do anything... I've rented a room but I can't sleep in the bed :-( ) Also is there a way to tell the in-game time?

2. Is there a console in the game? (not that I want to cheat, it just might come in useful!)

Many thanks to anyone who can help :)

Buy renting the room you already slept half a day. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

There is a console file you can edit to make things happen by pressing "F12" but it requires knowledge of coding and how the game works!

Build 12 does not have cheats enabled I think.

Post Build 12 does, but that is a work in progress and still has a lot of bugs.

Okay! Thanks! :-D

I'll leave my room I guess now then, I've been standing in it for about half an hour, trying to get the bed to work! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

I'll just downloaded and install Build 12... I'm going to go play for a bit <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" /> Thanks again!

Before you leave the room, check the chest.
You might find some useful stuff there.

You don't have to use the bed. When you rent a room, automatically when you leave, the time will have passed from night to day or from day to night. Time passes, I think, when you travel between locations, not while you are in a location. So you can stay in one location forever and never get further.

Okay, thanks for all your help!

Now, final questions (I promise!) <i>(I hope!)</i>...

Is there a way to turn the HUD off for screenshots? Also is there a way to pan around your character to see them from the front?

Thanks :)

You can't turn the HUD off for all I know. There is a setting in BuildSettings.h (something with camera) that will enable the camera to look at the main character from the front when you are standing near a door. Otherwise you can't pan around your character.

On land I don't think there is, but you only have the problem of the small icons of you and your officers.
Dismiss your officers and you only have that one small obstruction which is not hard to edit out.

At sea, the HUD is more involved.
You can get rid of one element, the "compass/wind direction/gun angle dial" at the upper right.
That is if you use Build12.
To do so, in game, go to Options, sailing mode, deselect "On-Screen display during sailing"

One easy way is to assign an officer the same skin/ clothing outfit, as your main character.

OH! So THAT's what "On-Screen display during sailing" does! I never knew what that was good for. Thanks for telling. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

It doesn't become immediately evident.

After you make the change you need to change the scene by either going into and back out of the cabin, or switching to map mode and back to sailing, for it to take effect.
