Negative rep for opening fire

if this is a known issue, my apoligies but..

I can be happily firing but then on one volley, seemingly involuntarily, I lose 15 rep points and become 'horror of high seas'. Because of this, i cant use any shops or shipyards save pirate ones. so of course, Ive got to use unprotected pirate ports like QC and smugglars if i want to sell or repair anything. But anyway, is this a known issue? I thought it was just a new device cos I was firing on ships which were sailing away, but then it did it to be when they were raking me and I used my chasers so it cant be that; it does it mainly when using grapes and the second i press to aim, I get 'changed rep for player: -15' or whatever it is and have to start getting them again. It happens regularly now so I have to stay reasonably close to QC island and use Charlestown for getting sink missions and promotions from the guv'nor.

Sorry if this is known, just thought i'd let it be known as it is really very annoying!

Thanks a ton, Skye

Did you hit a neutral/friendly ship?
Alternatively, did the ship surrender in the middle of the volley?

No; I would allow it if it was that, but its always just a normal ship continuing to fight; ive set surrendering really high so hardely ever does anyone surrender in my game. nationality makes no differance; its always in the middle of a fight too; when thyre at about 20-30 percent of hull dmg.

Really, really weird. Can anybody confirm? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

i THINK he may have been flying a flase flag. in combination with letters of marque, it can result with a reputation drop. it's written in one of the entries of the logbook.

I have 237 points on a British letter of marque and am commodore. Could it be that?

Thanks, Skye

that depends on the flag you where flying and of what nation the ship was you attacked. in my logbook, i changed my flag to the nation i belonged to when i was already within fireing range. for some reason, the nation i belonged to got hostile as soon as i opened fire.

Yeah; it does sound like the same problem, only I never fly false colours; Ive had the RN flag since day one . Though i mainly attack Dutch and pirate ships so It might well have something to do with those two nations. did you get -15 as well?

Skye

Try flying your personal colours all the time and see if you still have it.

OK; but i gotta warn u; Im VERY hated in the game; The dutch have a -127 and pirates -98. Though british im good friends with. I upgraded to Rear Admiral last night and it did it almost immedietly after. Serving as a privateer wont degrade my rerlationship with England will it, cos ive tried flying pirate colors to getb into tortuga and britain became hostile. Ill try anyway!

Heya; ive ad a breakthrough. Ive realized it only actually ever happens when i fire while aimed through the red crosshairs; if I aim above or below or anywhere else, it doesn't do it; only when the red hairs appear. As you can imagine, this is annoying cos I cant fire accurately. anyway, I think thats it. Ill report it in the bug tracker yeah?

If you're firing manually, there's a chance you hit friendly targets.
Examples could be friendly ships, your own ships or certain parts of the land.
If you hit those, your reputation can drop greatly.

Yes. To be honest, Pieter, ive made every exception; it really is just slap bang in the middle of battle in open sea. Its doing it more and more now, and its only when they turn red.

what, save the forts is there on land to fire at? Just wondering cos that has happened a few times.

Ive found my error in the bugtracker already with ID <a href="http://swankyplace.com/potcbugs/view.php?id=387" target="_blank">0000387</a>, so no worries now! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

It's in the Bug Tracker, so nothing to worry about???
That's... not entirely true...
There's plenty bugs in there that still haven't been fixed. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
