1. Not sure never really bothered myself if I get hated with a nation I just use em for money by capturing their ships etc

2. Not hugely important play the game get a feel for it and who owns what island etc will come to you.

3. This is a tricky one as it all depends on how you want to play and what u want the officer to do. If the officer is to command another one of your ships then skills like sailing and cannons etc and abilities that will help him sail more effectively, in the same sense if you want the officer to tag along with u for extra protection get him skills like defense and melee and abilities like advanced defense and professional fencer etc

4. This will depend on what ya planning on doing and how much money you have, just sailing around to do the quests get a small fast maneuverable ship so u can get places quicker and easier and be able to escape pirates by out running em. If ya gonna go pirating a reasonable ship with an ok fire power and a good speed and maneuverability so you can attack from the angle that gives you the advantage in speed angle and distance. If ya gonna go all out and bombard forts biggest is best huge fire power strong hull + full ship defense abilities

5. Again like the officer get the abilities to match your play type, but commerce and luck can help alot

Sail on <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" />

1. Talk to a governor. He'll ask for money. You gain rank as you defeat enemy ships. Larger ships give more points. If you want a letter of marque from the pirates, you need a bad reputation. You don't have to sail under the flag of that nation; I sail under a Portugese flag because they're neutral with everyone and only attack piraates.

2. Look in the trade book. Each town has a different shield logo. You can look under the Relations page to see which icon goes with which nation.

3. I like to get a gunner for his gun skills, a navigator for his sailing skills and a quartermaster to help me make money. A tough or bosun will have high melee skills. Officers hired to sail prize ships back to port, it doesn't matter what skills they have, at least for now.

4. I prefer a schooner. Fast, agile, can sail close to the wind, has reasonable cargo and gun capacity, and some have enough crew to manage a boarding.

5. Build 14 has an auto skill system that increases your skills as you do things that require them. If you're assigning skill points, luck is more important than you'd think, melee helps and leadership helps you get officers. If you have an officer with high skill, you get the same benefit.

Abilities: I prefer to get the various melee benefits as soon as possible. Toughness gives you extra hit points and you regenerate health faster. After that, you're mostly looking for abilities that your officers don't already have.

Hook

1. You can join the pirates as Hook says, but you don't get a LoM or anything similar. Therefore you don't go up through the ranks and don't get land either. Actually, joining the pirates is pretty useless as it is. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

And welcome to the forum, Captain Carlos! I hope you'll enjoy it here. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bounce.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":b:" border="0" alt="bounce.gif" /> Thanks for the help fellow salts <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> the game is hard to get use to whit all this diferent things <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> but little by little i have goteng the hang of it. About the letter of marque when i talk to a governor the choice that is close to a letter of marque is the one to plead for forgiveness and then he ask you for large amounts of gold, is that the letter of marque? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

I haven't seen that, but I think it happens if you've made that nation mad at you by sinking one of their ships. After you've bought forgiveness, you can probably get a letter of marque.

It may help to be flying either your personal flag or a flag from a nation that's not at war with the governor you're talking to.

Hook

... for my own experience, since Build 13, at the starting of the game you still have to 'plead for forgiveness' with the nation you start hostile with, such as France - even if you start with French Flag.

It should depend on whether you personally are hostile with the nation; not whether the flag you're flying is.
Indeed France is hostile to you by default because of the main quest, so there you'll certainly need to ask for forgiveness first.
The option where you have to pay large amounts of gold is indeed the one you need. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Of course you can always get the "win a girl in a card game" play it as a nice guy and get French clemency. That is if this quest is still working and in B14.

2. Look in the trade book. Each town has a different shield logo. You can look under the Relations page to see which icon goes with which nation

I have buldmod 13 final and i dont see any shilds on the trade book <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

The "girl in the card game" quest hasn't been removed (why should we?), but it could be that it got messed up somewhere. Somebody'd have to check. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Build 13:
- Douwesen - Dutch
- Oxbay - England
- Redmond - England
- Isla Muelle - Spain
- Conceicao - Portugal
- Quebradas Costillas - Pirate
- Hispaniola - Spain
- Cuba - Spain
- Antigua - England
- Saint Martin - Half Dutch, half France
- Guadeloupe - France
- Cayman - England
