New modpack update coming up

Pieter Boelen

I have now compiled the full modpack update including about everything new that I have. It seems to be working reasonably well. However, I'm afraid it is going to be a truly large download, because included are not only some small bugfixes, but also some rather large mods. See the list at the bottom of this post. So what I want to know is what should I make into a seperate download to decrease the filesize of the main modpack? At the moment I even have the new islands mod added in by default, because that is easier for me, but it isn't easier for people with slow internet connections. So please give me your views on this matter.

<i>New stuff included:</i>
- Bugfixes
- Two new captain's cabins (Maximus en Screwface)
- New interface improved even more (Maximus)
- More translation (Maximus)
- Age of Sail ship models in mapmode (CCC)
- Building Set (CCC)
- Many new character models (Daede)

There is much more new stuff than is listed here, but the things mentioned here are about the largest downloads. So which of these things should be additional downloads if possible?

<!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->Edit:<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> To illustrate how large the modpack has become: The full filesize (zipped) including everything (also the new islands mod) is now 220 MB. I am going to have some serious trouble uploading that. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

<!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->Edit 2:<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> Goodness gracious me. This is ridiculous. Even the update file is 100 MB! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
That does include the new island mod, but it is STILL much!

<!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->Edit 3:<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> The update is 65,6 MB without the new islands. This is going to be the largest update ever, apparently! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

For everyone wanting to have a look at the current work on the modpack, I uploaded the program files (excluding the resource files) to the FTP as new_files.zip. If you can help with it, please download that file and have a look at it.

Pieter, where do I go, or what do I do to get these from FTP site.....never been on one in my life....went looking for your downloads but they weren't on your page, so I guess they are elsewhere?

Here do you get to the ftp with your browser :

<a href="ftp://files%40piratesahoy.net:piratesahoy...iratesahoy.net/" target="_blank">ftp://files%40piratesahoy.net:piratesahoy...iratesahoy.net/</a>

and if you want to use a ftp programm use these information :

ftp.piratesahoy.net
user: files@piratesahoy.net
pass: piratesahoy

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Pieter,

I with a slow internet connection every option is too big for download. So I would prefer the 1st solution. So I can download the entire modpack from work (with large band connection) and take small update from home (with 56K connection).

I hope to see this new pack tomorrow, I can't wait... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> Bye, bye,
giuliootto

I would prefer the first variant too. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

I agree!...."Git er Done!"....one shot

I will try to make it into a lot of seperate downloads then. However, I would request everyone to download and install all of them over the coming weeks. I will make it so that the game will work without some of the new parts, but I will take the complete modpack as being the main version. It is too complicated to keep track of five or six additional downloads for me. It can only mean that I will accidentally cause more bugs.

Seperating all the files might be more complicated than I hoped at first. This is going to take a while. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

<!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->Edit:<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> What we would need is some sort of official Build update, like a Build 12.5 or something. The modpack is becoming a bit too large to handle! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

I could make a Build 12.5 based on Build 12 + Modpack 21 November 2005 + The most recent bugfixes. Then the modpack update can be based on that.

When I am done compiling, I will have the following files that could be uploaded:

<b>Post Build 12 Full</b>
220 MB
Contains all stuff in the Post Build 12 mods. I will not upload this, because I have no space enough.

<b>Post Build 12</b>
125 MB
This contains the 21 November 2005 version plus all bugfixes. It does not contain the stuff listed below as additional mods.

<b>Post Build 12 Update</b>
4,92 MB
This will update a 21 November 2005 version to the "Post Build 12" version above.

<b>Additional mods:</b>
<i>New Islands Mod</i> (35,8 MB)
<i>New Character Models by Daede</i> (7,98 MB)
<i>New Locations from Corsairs III</i> (33,0 MB): Brothel room and two captain's cabins
<i>Building Set</i> (16,4 MB)
<i>Mapships</i> (3,55 MB)

Please note that I will be unable to support every version, because I would then have to keep track of dozens of different versions. I will always support the Post Build 12 Full version, though I will try to support the other versions as well, but I can't keep supporting them into infinity. So I would recommend you try to get all additional mods (except the Mapships mod if you don't like that) and install those as well over the coming period of time.

Hi, Pieter. As it was said somewhere above, I think if anybody has dial-up connection yet, it is almost the same for him whether the file has 220 MB or 120 MB because it is too large file for him/her to download anyway. So, I wouldn´t do so much worry about that. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

I am finally done compiling the download files. Unfortunately, it took me the entire day to get the files compiled and seperated properly, so I don't have time anymore to upload them. I will do that first thing tomorrow. I have already found some new bugs, but I will post those once I uploaded the update. I'm sure those bugs can be quickly ironed out again. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I uploaded everything except the additional downloads already. Find the links in the Post Build 12 thread on the Build Beta subforum. Additional downloads are coming tomorrow. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

pieter boelen: [I could make a Build 12.5 based on Build 12 + Modpack 21 November 2005 + The most recent bugfixes. Then the modpack update can be based on that.]

won't we have to reinstall the whole game if you do that?
if it doesn't screw everything up with people who already have the build 12.1 and latest modpack updates then sure i think its an excellant idea <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> .
good luck pieter, and a million barrels of rum to ya for the work you and the other brilliant modders who have put the build and modpack together! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I don't think you would need to reinstall the game. After all, you already have that installed, right? Build 12 + Modpack 21 November 2005 + Update 16 January.

It would be some time before I could make such a Build 12.5 though. Keith needs to find some webspace somewhere and I don't know when he'll find it.

Thanks a lot for compiling all that stuff, and special thanks that you are willing to spent even more time to make the download more comfortable. Though I think it is the best solution to make only one package, anything else could lead to confusion for players and modders. For example will I use Buildingset models to create locations for the new islands that have a distinct look. So you'd need all the new stuff, or you would have to tell people "If you want to play this you have to download first this and then that..."

I am sorry for for all people with slow netaccess (4 months ago I belonged to them as well) but you just can't have new models, locations, buildings and islands without a big datavolume <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

As for making a "Build 12.5": if that makes things easier for you do it. And you could call it Build13 with a good conscience, there are so many new features <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
Keith <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> , that might be a nice PR boost for the PA! site <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> If it helps to clear hosting space you can delete all my older mods from site and FTP

Hi mates. I am quite curious what´s new in all the new stuff, so I would like to install it all but I would like to install everything including the Corsairs III models. So Pieter, when this Corsair III mod will be at the disposal for download? And you said you discovered some bugs here, so I would like to ask if it is better to wait a little after you will remove them or install everything as soon as possible? How serious are those bugs? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

And once more question. If I downloaded the current base version of the Modpack from 17th January 2006 can I use these two updates - the Small update (10 kB) and Update File (4,93 MB) too or not? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

To CCC: I would prefer to have one large package as well. Would be sooo much easier. But, because of the people with slow internet connection (and my limited amount of webspace), I did it like this. However, the complete version with everything installed will be considered the "main" version from now on. So all modders can safely base their mods based on the full version. So please do add new stuff by using the Building Set mod to the new locations. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

To players with slow internet connection: I understand you can't download 100 MB straight away. However, I would recommend getting all download files over the coming period of time anyway. Future updates will be based on the full complete modpack version, including all additional downloads. I will support the version without additional downloads for some time, but eventually I will be forced to quit supporting it. Sorry for that.

To Rad: I will try to get the Corsairs III mod uploaded somewhere today. The new bugs I discovered aren't really game-killing bugs. They're just weird and maybe annoying, but not really bad. And if you find stuff that <i>is</i> bad, just report it and we'll try to get a fix done. If you download the current base version (17th January 2006) you can use the small update and update file, yes. However, you don't have to, because those files are already included. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

I don't want to call it Build 13. Not that I am superstitious or something, but the Build was Nathan's work. I don't want to pretend to replace Nathan in any way at all. I wished he'd come back and make the official Build 13 himself.

Good point. You could mail Nathan and ask him if he would mind. I bet he doesn't, cause he always wanted this to be a community project.

OTH the name doesn't really matter, 12.5 or Post Build or Pieter's Pack are all fine <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />
