It's a good read, and very true. Few pirates were anythong other than common murderers and robbers.

It's makes me a little sad. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p2" border="0" alt="pirate3.gif" />:

Sure they may have been common murderes and thieves. Think of it this way though. A common seaman in the Royal Navy made slightly more than a pound a month. A pirate could easily make 1000 if he hit one marginally well to do vessel. Most governors only made 350 pounds a year. Thieves? Sure. Murderes? Yup. Stupid? Absolutely not. That's what makes pirates so fantastic. They saw the corrupt governments around them and decided that, "Hey, why not me too? At least my thievery won't be hidden behind a facade of law".

True - i'm sure if you could count the balance of evil, then pirates would come of quite lightly when compared to nation states and countries - even if you just stuck to the same time frame.

That might be true, and that is probably a reason why so many people went into piracy, that did not happen THAT often. Also many pirates only survived anywere from a couple weeks, a couple months, or a couple years, due to a Naval Ship were constantly looking for you from all countries. Just watch what happens in the POTBS world.

I agree that the amount specified in my previous post was a bit over the norm for a haul from a plundered ship, but I was only making a point. Many larger troves were taken though with the largest known being recorded at 4000 pounds per pirate not counting the additional shares doled out to the officers of the pirate vessel. As for POTBS; Hhehehe, I can't wait for that! If ye see a ship named Nuestras Senora De Pamela, you'll know it's me. And if you're French, i'm gonna tear a hole in your boat under the water line the size of a small aquatic mammal. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />
