New Program Idea

Hey guyz! I just got a super idea but I am really not sure if it will work. What I mean is that, well maybe the files format wont be compatible or something like that. Maybe it wont make an animation but why not give it a try? So, my idea is a program that "Industrial Designers" used to work with. It's called Inventor and its pretty simple AND it makes really good things. The problem is, it's a program that is used to make object like ex: A bottle, (if u want to have fun lol) a gun, a rock nicely designed, a desk.. NOT animated products... What my idea is.. we COULD make really great ships and all with it but I'm pretty sure it wont work because it doesn't make animations.. Anyway you could try to make animations with it but what I will try is to make objects for PotC that don't really have one like.. hmm maybe a desk? or a chair? why not a THRONE? lol anyway, just something I thought of.. and I tell you, it IS simple... I mean, I know a little kid in high school (about second..) and he uses it for fun lol.. If you already tried it or have an idea or just want to leave a comment, feel free!

(Actually I'm not sure if the program really CAN'T do ANY animations..)

Well, do you have a URL? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> Sounds interesting. What file type can it export to, and what type does it save as? I personally have a lot of fun with the freeware 3D modeling program called Blender that has many available import and export data types (I just can't import the old VRML files converted from potc, darn. I can still export them though).

Here are two views of a small schooner model I'm working on (very slowly though mind you):
<img src="http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v158/33/34/25317413/n25317413_31938326_4629.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

and

<img src="http://photos-d.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v158/33/34/25317413/n25317413_31938327_4897.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I've still got to mess with the shape a little, add cannons and some other deck features. Then I'll start working on making seperate rigging and walk files and stuff and hopefully have it in the game sometime, though I hardly know anything about texturing, so I may need some help there. It will probably be some time before I ask for it though.

But the program you're talking about sounds interesting; maybe you could provide a link...

Looks nice, Lord Perfect! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

As for the program you refer to, James IronHook, we don't need anything animated. Ships are not animated; the sails and flags are all added in different ways; not straight onto the model. But making a ship is one thing; adding it ingame is another. For that the program needs to be able to export directly to GM or to VRML or X files that can be converted to GM by Inez Dias' Tool.

The original programmers for PotC used Maya to make their ships and anything else. It IS possible to do everything perfectly with this program. We just can't figure it out. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

You could make some excellent seawrecks and other stuff to place along the beaches or in the water near the harbours. The seabed are so empty some places.

There's nothing to figure out. We just need a full version of Maya 4.5 where plugin 4.5 goes. Then we should not have exporting problems like current maya 5.0's plugin has. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Actually ...i think there's another way too: We have to get some programmer who makes programs take a VERY GOOD look at our TOOL or that Maya 5.0 Plugin and then FIX THEM! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Guys we really can't finish Build Mod if our new ships remain with reversed lighting effect. Call it the 1000th time i blow meself up. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" />

Yesterday I saw Inzane browing the forum. He put the Surprise in the game and knows how to use Maya. So I sent him a PM. Right now he is busy relocating, but he's willing to help us. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

REALLY? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

Does the ship what he made is without reversed lighting effect? if so then WAY TO GO MATE! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

It was without reversed lighting effect originally. It does have that effect now though, because Merciless Mark made some modifications to the model and used Inez Dias' Tool for conversion and couldn't get rid of the problem. Both he and I tried very hard. Actually: That was the first time we were made aware of the existance of that problem.

As for the link for the program, well it's a really powerful program so it's not free... But we can download it and crack, the easy way <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> anway here are some screen shots to show a bit the power of the program : <img src="http://www.speak4cad.com/Image/Inventor.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" /><img src="http://manufacturing.cadalyst.com/manufacturing/data/articlestandard/manufacturing/202005/160503/05inventor9.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

EDIT: Btw, Inventor is MUCH MORE powerful than Maya

Alright, If u really want that link well I found one but that's if u know how to download .torrent files (pretty easy). But
I'm telling u, it is around 4gig with the crack... so anyway here's the link: <a href="http://www.mininova.org/get/982458" target="_blank">http://www.mininova.org/get/982458</a>

So we really need to know to which file formats this program can export. In any case: I do believe Maya is the best program for modifying PotC, because that's what Akella themselves used. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

emm i know it CAN save to .ipt files.. and somehow we can convert it to .dxf... and some other file formats hmm im rly not sure well, i'll be looking all day and tell u what i have found..actually i'll install the program and well see

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of MOD! tadaaaaaaaaaaaa i think i found it.. well i think it saves into VRML format.. hmm i'll keep reading and ill edit this post after with more info <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" />

<b>EDIT</b>: <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> i'm pretty sure it WILL work <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> ok so it says that :<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->VRML Translator is very easy to use - just use the "File > Save copy as" function in Autodesk Inventor to save your current part (.IPT) or assembly (.IAM) to a WRL format file.

You can use the Options button in the 'Save copy as' dialog to set the output format, facetting tolerance, numeric (coordinates) precision, scale, flipping of Y-Z coordinates, intensity of ambient light and document properties.

Exported VRML file also contains 6 predefined views - Top, Bottom, Front, Back, Left and Right. If your VRML viewer (browser) supports Views (Viewpoints), you can use these predefined views to display your model.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

that's the link : <a href="http://www.xanadu.cz/en/vrmlout.asp#AI" target="_blank">http://www.xanadu.cz/en/vrmlout.asp#AI</a>

Exporting to vrml won't do any good because we'd still have to export a .gm in TOOL anyways which causes the reversed S***. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" />

<!--quoteo(post=224967:date=Dec 8 2007, 07:15 PM:name=Cylon13)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Cylon13 @ Dec 8 2007, 07:15 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Exporting to vrml won't do any good because we'd still have to export a .gm in TOOL anyways which causes the reversed S***. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
well... anyway let's then try to figure out maya XD

how much does maya cost?

I'm not going to do it illegaly either. That's why I use Blender. Blender I think is a little harder to use but can do a whole lot of stuff and export to many different data types.

I think Maya is ridiculously expensive. And we can only use the older Maya 4.5 or 5.0, because that's the only versions for which there is a GM export plugin. We've got Maya 5.0 on the <a href="http://pafiles.com/potc/Maya%205.0/" target="_blank">FTP</a> though along with the plugin. Feel free to try it.

How about Max then..or Gmax?
I was doing searches for a .gm converter all night, but the format is some kind of non-existing. I think it´s a format, Akella use for themselves to be sure, nobody else is messing around with their models?

I think it's an Akella-only format. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />
There's two ways of converting to GM:
1) Export from Maya with the GM plugin (this is what Akella uses and would be ideal if only we could get it to work)
2) Use a program (3D Studio MAX for example) that can export to VRML, then convert to GM using Inez Dias' Tool (this works, but introduces the reversed lighting issue and won't generate correct collision data and first person camera walk data)
