Newcomer - problem with Build 14

dylan_noy

Landlubber
Hello,

Have got B13 + update running well. Tried to run B14 but have been experiencing problems. Firstly, when I try the tutorial and follow Malcolm out on deck, the screen goes black. Similarly, if I try the storm start, this is OK until I board, and once again everything goes black.

I have successfully got B13 back up and running. Would like to have another go at B14 but wondered if the new versions of B14 + update address this particular issue? If indeed this was ever recognised as a widespread problem at all - and therefore not addressed in the new version of B14. I have not seen other people commenting on this problem but would appreciate any advice.

Love the mods - very enjoyable. Many thanks.

just install the newest fixes for build 14 alpha. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> you can find them on pieter boelen's site. a lik to the site and a direct link to the download can be found in his signature. you can find a lot of other interesting things on his site, so be sure to check it out. however, i'm not entirely sure if this fixes your problem. but i think it will.

Thank you for your reply.

I have downloaded and applied both new files. Screen going black is no longer a problem and can successfully follow Malcolm out on deck etc. and start the game.

BUT I now have lots of green and red translucent globes and pieces of text all over the screen, such as "officers reload2_1", "goto citizen02" and "camera locator18". I think I followed the instructions correctly but wondered if anybody has any ideas what I am doing/has gone wrong?

Advice would be greatly appreciated as would love to start checking out all the new features - the screen is a blur with offputting text at the moment?

That was a debugging tool that was set on by accident in the update. Open the file PROGRAM\InternalSettings.h with a text editor and find the line:
#define VISIBLE_LOCATORS 1
change to:
#define VISIBLE_LOCATORS 0

Thanks for the quick reply - problem solved and hopefully can now get up and running!

you should be able to. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> a word of warning though: boarding a surrenderd ship doesn't work right yet, so be a little careful there. pieter, the modpack compiler, thinks he can easily fix it, so i think the fix for that will be in the update soon. you could also put the text file for boarding back in, that should work. i don't remember the name, but i know it's in the previous update. someone else could give you the name of the file. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

For now, does setting the surrender option to 0.0 in build settings i.e. no surrender, get around this problem? Not confident enough yet to really know where to stick files etc.

Thanks.

well, as long as the captain surrenders without talking to you, it works. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> but if he does, ye be screwed. if you change what you mention, the ships never surrender. but there is a chance that the captian might surrender during a boarding fight. if i where you, i'll just wait until it's fixed. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> you can finish the game without boarding. (you can, because i actually did it once!)

I think I found the cause for the problem with the captain surrender. Please stick the file in attached ZIP file in PROGRAM\DIALOGS\ENGLISH and see if that solves anything.

testing the file now...[got EXTREMELY ANNOYED AT THAT.]
funny thing is, [and i dont know if it's me or the game], when i leave the tutorial cabin and walk onto the deck, i cant leave the ship. im stuck there, with a person walking around on deck, but nothing else. no open door-or-chest icon anywhere...i walk around searching for an exit, but no luck. it may also be good to mention that this happened when starting with the Bermuda sloop [thought i could probably start off easy by selling it and buying me something a bit nicer...like a Caravel or something]

EDIT: works. the captains can speak now. no more missing dialog.....though, is there anyway to change the exact lines in the dialog? because, pardon my boldness, many of the sentences are obviously translated, and dont sound right. i'd like to fix them, and maybe upload the fixed one if it actually works. any way to do that? do i just go into the Dialog file and fix it? or are the sentences inaccessable through it?

as far as the Cabinfight error i was giving advice just to use an earlier version {i.e b13_beta8} and in fact that did solve the problem....info for thought,spater

i've just finished fiddling with the Cabinfight dialog file, fixing it to fit PotC [the movie] a bit more. it's also been fixed in terms of mistakes. im going to test it and see how it does in game. if it works, i'll upload it, for whoever wants it.

Edit: i've done a bit of fiddling, and have made one i hope should be satisfactory. mi first mod...hope you guys like it
it should work perfectly fine. i tested it before uploading it. enjoy!

Thanks, Lord Nelson. I'll check that file out. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

as the lord said, the file indeed works. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> just wanted to confirm.

Yes, it does. I've tested it myself yesterday as well. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Definitly better. I made some slight changes to it as well and I added into the Build 13 and Build 14 Alpha updates I'm currently uploading. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

Yay! im a contributor to the build! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/jackhat.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":j2" border="0" alt="jackhat.gif" />
now i feel important...
you know, if it wasnt for certain limitations, i would try and turn the player's character's dialog into one more suited to Jack Sparrow...for a nice laugh the whole way through...but, im nowhere near experienced enough to do it yet...
